Fake Providence College Green Sandy Hook jersey on eBay

Some quick background info... the coach of PC .. Ed Cooly used to coach Fairfield and had close ties to the area.... he coordinated with Nike and got the jerseys ready for their first game after the tragedy as a tribute to the victims... They were worn once and then given to the families.

I'm not really sure what to make of this auction. I'm a providence fan but this not something I would want for my collection. The wording in the subject wouldn't really draw attention to the auction. I was debating buying it and relisting with a better subject and donating 100 percent to a scholarship or something that would go towards the families of community. The listing just seemed odd to me. I don't know of a number 20 on the roster. According to the articles I've seen.. The jerseys were going to be given to the families that were affected. I didn't want to contact the seller in case it's someone the jersey was given to... But I also don't want someone scamming or exploting this horrible horrible thing for personal gain. Should I just leave if alone... Should I bid and relist and donate the proceeds or should I contact the seller for more information and if they are legit help them with listing that might get more attention??

Here is an article showing the REAL jerseys. See pics below as well.

It looks to me that the game used jerseys had "Sandy Hook" written on the back!

Also the originals didn't have the white stripes on the sleeves. People can make these in their basements, I'd just leave it alone.

I would call the athletic department at PC to see if they sold any to the public through their fan shops.
I don't think they did, as I remember Ed Cooley saying he ordered the jerseys for the team after school president ok'ed.
    I'm guessing it is fake.
  • I contacted the seller and asked if this was one of the jerseys used in the game commemorating the victims. His response:

"Yes but from what I am told this was to be used as a back up jersey in case a player due to injury or jersey being ripped would be replaced with this one. All teams carry an extra two in case this happens."

    Problems:

    - Game jerseys from link do not have white sleeve piping (from earlier reply). Replacement jersey does not have the neck piping that was on the actual game jersey.
    - Look at photos from linked article - the 'Providence' script is completely different - makes no sense to have two different fonts
    - And as reported earlier, there is no #20 on the PC roster. Then why would they have a 'back up' jersey for a player who doesn't exist?

Listing reported as a fraud. I may be wrong, and usually I am caveat emptor when it comes to stuff sold on ebay, but this one just rubs me the wrong way.

There is low and then there is this... It's such a delicate subject I didn't even want to contact seller incase it was legit and they were directly impacted by what happened.... But it's seems pretty clear it's someone looking to capitalize on one of the worst things I could possibly imagine. I was going to contact at PC athletic dept and report the auction to them and let the proceed how they see fit.. Looking at the sellers feedback.. Looks like they have also sold other Nike products and Louis Vuitton bags. Makes me really question the authenticity of the bags too.
