Heritage auction today...

Well it looked to me that coins were going very cheap. I know the internet only days are supposed to be the cheaper stuff but still they had some decent coins if you looked at the lots, and the two I picked up were about 1/2 what I expected. I didn't get to see the Austrian but watched the French, and with a few minor exceptions everything seemed to be at low estimate or below.

1757 Bavaria Taler in AU55 - not the finest graded in the Maximillian III Joseph series, but the finest graded for the date. Even with the cracked planchet it looks good enough for my set.




1808 Anhalt Bernburg 2/3 Taler in MS64 - a fractional, but tough in high mint state (this is a pop 1/0 coin at present), and I was very surprised at the price, about 60% of my high bid. I've looked at quite a few raw and none that were as nice as this.




Now I can only hope the bids on the British lots tomorrow do as well. So how did everyone else do today?

I managed to pull in one lot from HA. I just had to wait to the end of the January "auction season" to make my move. It is a tough piece from the German States of Trier to add to my sede vacante collection.

I was sweating it Zohar! A very scarce piece - its the only Trier sede vacante piece graded by both PCGS and NGC in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or 1 taler denominations. I am just glad that all you big spenders already made your moves and cleared the dancefloor for me to have a chance.

Really nice pick ups. The taler and the token are my favorites. Heritage internet only is actually an excellent auction to buy a few lots on the cheap. Good luck to the rest of you.

- 1901 6d in MS67 750 USD
- 1889 sm hd shilling MS66 1900 USD

Both were "plus the juice".


OK, quiz kids, which was high and which was low???

Nice Bavarian! I particularly like the peripheral aspect of the obverse toning.

The Anhalt is nice, too. I wonder how much luster is there.

No Heritage bids for me, but it looks like I won a Byzantine tremissis from CNG this afternoon.

The 1889 small head shilling was low, since in that condition it is probably one-of-a-kind. That variety is quite rare (R2 is ESC).
As for the 1901 Sixpence, I wanted it, didn't win it, and made certain that whoever did paid a hefty price for it.

I agree with Wybrit, the 1889 was a shocker, but it's going to a good home (not mine). I got 4 lots very cheap in todays auction, I really screwed up not getting the 1818 6d, that went to cheap also.

IMO, lucky for you on that tanner, as Vicky's forehead looked like she'd been pummeled in a UFC octagon. I guess the glitzy toning blinded the graders between donuts in the am and the light vinaigrette salad at lunch.

This is probably the largest auction I have seen from Heritage. Thickest catalog and lengthy auctions. Perhaps overwhelming for the collector base where certain pieces fell off the radar screen.

Thanks for Mac's suggestion (MacCrimmon) re PCGS tip - I did not master it yet but here is a feeble attempt to show a newp - a Poland 5 Zlotych (3/4 Rouble) 1835-MW in a very tough grade (would easily go MS61 too that I was chasing and happy the dance floor was quiet
I'll re-image it eventually

And one final win!!! This one didn't sell in the main auction, no bids at all at the reserve so I made an offer and it was accepted today.

1789 Lubeck Schilling, only an AU53, but it's the gold version, a pretty darn scarce coin normally minted in silver.
