What no thread on Credit Card thefts at FUN.......
yet?
Many of today's credit cards have a RFID (radio frequency chip) in the card that is constantly broadcasting
the card number and expiration date. This technology was designed for the Retailer to be able to check
a customer out faster at the register. No swiping needed nor even removing it from a wallet or purse. The
hand held scanner just needs to be within a few feet to "capture" the number and make the transaction.
However, theft of numbers has been constantly on the rise since the RFID was introduced. Over 200 million
Credit Cards have been issued with the imbedded RFID. Is yours one?
Here is how to tell: The cards in question typically have an icon on them showing several radio waves or are labeled “Pay Pass.”
If you have a card that shows the above then call the CC company and request that they issue you a card
without the RFID chip. If they won't do that then get one of the little foil lined CC pouches that keeps anyone
from nabbing the number. Pic included.
Be wary, be smart, stay safe in all public venues!

Hmmm
<< <i>Did you just see Elvis at the mall or something? >>
Wei - after the last Philadelphia show I got funny charges on the credit card & a few forum members reported the same thing. Dunno about this RFID business but better safe than sorry. Yeah, the credit card company won't charge you in case of theft but it is still a hassle to change your number with all your regular vendors.
Anyway, you have to be within several inches of the card for it to work. It's not like someone can walk around and just grab data from cards yards away.
I sincerely hope you never learn the lesson I did about that government protection. Good luck!

I understand theft can happen in many forms but to assume (not prepare for, but to assume) the presence of theft before one incident is confirmed reeks of paranoia. In the numismatic universe it seems that is not an isolated trait.

<< <i>RFID is not what some think. There is not a little battery in there powering the thing. It needs to be "activated". It works on induction. The RF from a reader powers the card.

I saw a video online of someone just walking by a person eating in a food court at a mall and being able to pick up their credit card data. Not inches several feet work just fine.
