Doug
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Then the Phillies happened to win one World Series because they had an excellent team(along with Howard being a good player too), and Howard had a lucky post season series or two and somehow he got nicknamed 'clutch city' and was proclaimed as a 'winner'....however as more post season appearances accumulated, he regressed and was god awful, striking out a million times in a row, and even being the last out in TWO different series! Clutch city he was not!
Howard was an elite player for the period of ONE season. Very good for a few more, and has been pretty average the other years. Last year he was simply putrid.
He turned 33, and while it is possible to put a decently good lucky year together still, he will most likely be very average to below. How amazing that the article states that he isn't finished yet...but then suggest he should be a platoon player!! 25 million for a platoon player? Ummm, that is finished to me!
I kind of hope he doesn't platoon, because it would be enjoyable seeing him battle the Mendoza line while being paid 25 million dollars....and watching all those foolish Philly fans like SteveK cry!

Like most fans, you are being influenced by the team dependent RBI stat, and aren't aware of the importance of OB%.
That one season where he had the OPS+ of 167 he was still elite even for a bad fielding first baseman.
Those couple years where he was in the 140's as a bad fielding first basement, he is not elite, and by elite I am talking about top ten or top 15 type player in the league. If you want to drop that line to a top 50 or top 75 player in the league...then sure he was elite.
All those other years where he was below 130 in OPS+, and was still a bad fielding first basement...he isn't remotely close to being elite any way you slice it. If you want to call him elite compared to you or me, then yes...but he was not elite compared to MLB players.
Those MVP rankings are more reflective of the stupidity and ignorance of the writers , and because he had a group of excellent teammates to insure his team would be near the top in the league(thus meaning he would get more MVP votes). Those votes however don't mean squat in determining how good a player he is/was.
I too was always in the crowd that looked at RBI #'s as a HUGE stat to gauge a player but its so true that its irrelevent, I love the big HR numbers but I would take less HR's for a higher OB%
<< <i>Howard was never as good as people thought he was to begin with! Because he had a lot of base runners on base(and runners who ran very well), his RBI totals were higher than that of what superior hitters could achieve who didn't have such luxuries. There were even posters on this board who felt he was better than Pujols, or 'more valuable', LOL.

Maybe they could trade him to the Dodgers for their waterboy!
