A friend and regional dealer told me just before he flew to Florida that everyone who DRIVES, is a sitting duck when parked and the vehicle is unattended. Particularly those with "out of town" plates, or rental cars. Easy target. Glass shatters quite simply and slim jims , though not lawful are tools of the trade. A burglar and a thief never sleep. They are more vigilant than gate keepers.

I am sorry for this dealer, and their loss. This is another reminder to always remain vigilant and never leave your coins unattended. The bad guys need only the smallest window of opportunity to make you a victim.

When are dealers going to learn! The dealer was leaving early Sunday morning and the show staff tried to get them to put there stuff in security for Saturday night and pick it up Sunday morning. The security room was 24-7! They went to a McDonalds and while they were inside the thiefs popped their trunk and were off with their loot in probably less than a minute.

I'm sorry for the dealer's loss but as much as this has been happening the last few years it just amazes me. As a side note as long as some dealers continue doing this maybe it will keep the violence down as the theives have enough to keep them satisfied. Once there are no easy targets I'm sure they will step up their game...IE robbery at gunpoint, run you off the road, etc.

After the same thing happening several times over the last few years you would think this would be preventable with some thought put into action.

I hate to hear this but it happens every year. Another dealer had a shop back home broken into while he was at the show, he was an 18 drive away.

Once you are in that car keep driving, a long, long ways.

Sunday morning we got gas on the way to the center. Loaded up, took the bags down out front next to a Sheriff car, then sent for the car. Drove straight to car rental return. By no means fool proof but limited some chance for a problem. There is a big need for precautions at a major show.

Or a good opportunity to set up a sting operation.

BAJJERFAN took the words out of my mouth. As I was reading this thread, and it seems we have this same thread after every show, I was thinking STING. This seems like it shoud be a fairly easy one to set up.
  • This happens with an alarming degree of regularity.
While I'm sorry the dealer got robbed, he should have known better.
  • This unfortunate theft also illustrates another problem. Dealers have terrible eating habits. They spend too much time at fast food restaurants, and it shows.

If, instead of fast-food, that dealer snacked on granola bars while he was driving, he would be healthier and he would still have his inventory.

    Just my two cents.

From what I was told the dealers were going to babysit their coins in the hotel that evening and leave the next morning. Babysitting coins in a hotel room invites the possibilty of a violent confrontation. image

If you have something of that value in the car, you dont leave the car. McDs has a drive thru. While I feel bad for them, this was avoidable.

one thing i don't understand is why when carrying thousands of $ worth of coins why don't people take the smart route and leave the coins at a private security company's vault when not using them yes i know it's pricy but at least they would have their coins and seems to me the price of having your coins far outweighs the price of being a total fool

Some things can not be done at a drive thru.....

Hopefully the coins are recovered and luckily no one got hurt.

I agree. I feel bad too, he is a victim. But my word, I have read this forum for years and how many times is it the same story? Out of town dealer, car is burglarized while person is inside restaurant eating. It can be a crappy world out there for sure. But maybe it is just me, but I am extra paranoid about not leaving things of value in my car. I either take it in with me, or eat in the car when traveling if taking it is not practical.
