NFL Playoff run and the Coin Toss

I've always wondered what coins get used for the coin toss in the NFL. I know they're not circulating coins. But what firm makes the coins for the NFL coin tosses?

I remember as a kid in the Midget Football league we had one Ref who always used a Morgain $1 for the coin toss. I thought that was pretty cool.

Good post, I always wondered about that and what happens to them afterwards.

I'm sure there's a few in some NFL executives/former referee's desk somewhere. I've never seen one in hand.

How much do you think the average person might be willing to pay to buy one if the NFL or NCAA would make them available? I always thought it might be nice to have one from a major bowl game like the Rose.

Here are the defined rules for the NFL coin toss (from NFL.com)

There is no defined coin that is used in an NFL coin toss. The only rule is that it must have two distinct sides: NFL Rule Book (section 2 article 2)

Although it doesn't actually specify it in the official NFL Rule Book, it is in fact true that any coin may be used as long as there are 2 distinct sides, a "heads" and a "tails"

An ATB quarter should do the trick.

RYK, Thanks for sharing. Of course Super Bowl XIII included the Steerlers in 1979 so it's no doubt you had no ulterior motives in sharing? image

But I agree that thread shed some great info on what coin was used for the toss, by none other than the founder of the modern NFL George Halas. However, there are 47 other Super Bowl coins used in the the Proverbial coin-toss to investigate. I know some are/were real U.S. Minted coins and many others that weren't.

I'm just curious if any Numismatist has ever researched this peculiar corner of numismatics with respect to the NFL.

    Cheers1
