Any one have a feel yet for how the gold stickered SPQR collection is doing at FUN??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,460 ✭✭✭✭✭
I suspected that taking out the high bidder for the gold _ _ _ stickered slabs and dumping so many at once would result in some good buys.

Anyone have a feel for purchase price vs current prices realized??

I can speak to the gold coins. There are still quite a few to go in the Internet sessions, but the signature sales coins were pretty strong, some much better than I would have expected, all sold for levels above what one would expect for the slab grade.

Consider changing the title to reflect that it was the sale of the SPQR collection, and everyone will know what you are talking about, and no be will get in trouble. image

$1000 for a common date buffalo nickel seems strong to me.

I don't know these, and I did not view the coin. Perhaps it is a solid 67 or higher?

I recognized one of my old coins.

I tried to sell a low grade $20 Lib on the BST and had no luck at around $2000. After it got the gold bean, I sold it to a dealer for $2700.

Don't know what he marked it up. It brought around $2450 in the sale all in.

    Which one?

There were a handful of my old coins in the sale. I was aggressively trying to buy one back (the 1852 $5), but I looked at it again and decided to let it go.

  • I would agree with RYK the Gold beans on the gold coins have brought strong prices so far.

I know I paid a premium for the one I picked up. The 1925 MS 63 Saint.

I looked at a few of them and of the ones I was looking at, they all sold for more than a nice coin in the next grader higher usually trades for.

My current BST offering of gold beaned coins sold fast! (granted, they're eye appealing coins, too, not just undergraded coins) .....

I picked off this one and moved into the top five. Funny I can trace the coin back a few auctions and it says the coin sold for 690 in august of 2011 and it shows it was From The Elbesaar Collection, so 2 years later is cost me 705. And now says From The SPQR Collection of Gold Sticker Coins. It is my first sticker coin and look forward to getting it in hand............All the coins in my series sold for above the price guide with or without the sticker, seems like there is good interest in the series.Enjoy imageimageimage

I tracked a number of Gold stickered coins. They all had bids above what I felt the coins were worth, so I did not bid on even one coin.

I viewed one gold sticker coin in lot viewing. It was an 1862 half dime in an older holder, graded MS62. I figured it would sell for at least MS63 price and maybe MS64 price. I think it actually closed at MS64+ price.

I was fortunate that I found an attractive, colorful, MS64 of the same date for less money than the gold sticker coin closed at...and I like my coin better.

<< <i>I would not in general pay more +1 grade for a gold bean coin. Most of the gold bean coins I have seen generally sell
    at +1 to +1.5 grade premium. >>

Even if the coin is undergraded by 3 grades?

I previously owned the 1862 gold sticker half dime. I bought it (unstickered) from Mark Feld and was surprised when it came back gold. I then sold it to one of the dealers who was supplying coins to Mr. SPQR.

There were several gold stickered coins in this sale that I felt had a good shot at a +2 upgrade after seeing them in lot viewing.

It really is a beauty, but I did not want to risk having to pay five hundred for it when a really nice MS64 could be had for less

Would not in this case it be more logical to send it for regrade rather than beaning. Cash on the label trumps sticker on the slab I would think.

What grade would that amount of money generally get for a similar coin? >>

    MS63-64, I think.

That coin could garner an AU55 if regraded, but I think AU58 is out of the question.
The realized price was all about buzz, color, holder, and sticker.
