Print Snow

how much can it hurt the grade of a card? I'll try to upload a scan of one my cards that has significant snow. It's a real beauty that's a little bit off-centered, but the print snow really makes it take a hit in my book. New to the board here, so let's see if I can get an image up without a problem.

    Welcome...

I would say that it would hurt the grade by 2 grades...if you scan the card with the scanner lid UP it will show a dark background which makes it easier to see the corners.

Lid up does not work on every printer, including my HP all in one. I realize this is not an ideal printer. Maybe it would work better in complete darkness which I have not tried. I recently bought a new computer not compatible with the scan on this printer, so I can not experiment.

I taped a piece of black construction paper under the lid of mine. That makes the background dark gray. I also have a 4 row box lid with black construction paper taped underneath to put over the scanner. That works like a charm.

<< <i>As for scanning, lid up works great but you also need a dark room to have the darkest background ... so scan at night image >>

    I agree with this. image

However, it's not necessary to wait until dark. Close the shades in your office/card area and then scan with the lid up. image

Normally PSA would give it the grade it deserves then add the PD print defect qualifier. If that were the case I would estimate a PSA 7PD. However, that is one extreme case of "print snow" so they might even grade it lower due to overall picture quality. It's always too bad when we have cards that are really nice except they have print defects. But thats the print quality control that inopacted cards that are 40-50+ years old.

that card doesn't need a PSA holder, it needs a chairlift.
