nice token
Haven't purchased any new ones lately but I always liked this one as so far it is unlisted and unique.
And I love the old handwritten envelops back then
A little side note years ago a similar token sold for over $500
The difference being the edge inscription. Mine is a plain edge.
What is neat is on these pieces the third side of the coin is as important as the obverse and reverse
Description was:
Fascinating Denton's London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: A numismatist, smoking a churchwarden's clay pipe, sitting at a table strewn with coins.
Behind him an old man with a stick advances to place a fool's cap on his head: "TOKEN COLLECTORS HALFPENNY. PAYABLE ON DEMAND 1796".
Reverse: Two men mounted on donkeys frantically racing to the right: "ASSES RUNNING FOR HALFPENCE".
Edge inscription in low relief: "ANY SUM GIVEN FOR SCARCE ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONS".
This was issued when token collecting was at its height, making fun of collectors who could not distinguish between genuine and false pieces.
Dalton & Hamer originally attributed them to the coin dealer, Denton but Bell has subsequently attributed them to Westwood.
Listed in Dalton & Hamer and Bell as: "R - RARE". Bell uses the obverse design as the cover picture on his book:
"Specious Tokens and those struck for General Circulation 1784-1804".
Unusual token in lovely collectable condition, see photograph.
This is the book they spoke about
