Wish Me Luck Tomorrow

I am coaching two different teams; my 6 year old and 10 year old daughters. We have had (3) practices and our first games are tomorrow morning. This is the first year I have coached basketball and my daughters. I am super excited but at the same time am very nervous. My oldest daughters team has been pretty good because most of the girls have played before but by 6 year old's team is going to be interesting. I think it will be like herding cats.....LOL.

I will let everyone know the outcome tomorrow.

  • Good Luck Coach Mark!!!! Should be fun and exciting, maybe a little challenging, but that's good.

Best of luck! I coached my son's little league baseball team 3 years ago, and was assistant coach of his flag football team this past fall. It can be challenging, but my best advice is to 1) make sure playing time is equal, and 2) keep smiling yourself and keep asking them if they are having fun image.

I'd start them off with a Lombardi speech...winning isn't everything, it's the only thing!!

You won't be the only one coaching tomorrow. I got roped into coaching my 8 year old son's dek hockey team again this season. I went to sign him up and was told that there was a waiting list. But the owner knew I had coached before so he said that Zachary could sign up if I coached his team. Of course I agreed and now I've got a bunch of 7 to 9 year olds, half of which have never played organized dek hockey before. First order of business, offsides, LOL.

My advice to you is to enjoy being there with your daughters. They will always remember this, even if you do pass out before tipoff. image

My biggest concern during the game is to make sure everyone gets equal playing time and is having fun. If you don't have one already, get another father to help out as an assistant coach. Two is even better. I don't know about girls, but boys are hard to keep focused while on the bench. I find that game situations are the best way for kids to learn. I like to give feedback to the kids when they are on the bench to help them improve and having assistant coaches around enables me to do that.

We lost our first game 2-1, but I was very happy with the effort which was all that really mattered. Wishing you better luck on the scoresheet, but enjoy the ride.

I open practice with the kids running and end with them running. They actually ask "when are we going to run again". LOL. I was kidding with my 10 year old and told her we may not win one game this year but we will be the most well conditioned team on the court. image

Mike, the good thing for me is I only have 5 kids for the 5-6 year olds (3 play at a time) and 5 kids of for the 9-10 year olds (4 play at a time) so it will make the playing time issue easy. I am a competitive guy and hate to lose but I told myself that I am going to just have fun and make sure I can teach as much of the basics as possible.

I will probably need to take a hand towel so I can chew on it like "The Shark"

I am so jealous. I've got 12 kids on my team and when all of them show up like they did last weekend, I've got two full lines plus one extra so someone is always sitting out a shift. Between that and learning 11 kids names on the fly since I couldn't get a practice together before the first game, it is amazing that I made it to the end of the game.

I hear you on being super competitive. I play hard from start to finish, but I realize that everyone isn't wired that way which is cool with me. As long as they all have fun and try, that is all you can ask.

Have them press relentlessly, and you'll be fine. The key to all youth sports (aside from baseball and football) is to have the kids press when they lose possession in the offensive 1/3 of the field/court/rink. Do that and you'll be in great shape.
  • Officials like tens and twenties based on my experience.
  • I've coached 14u and 16u girl's softball. When they get to be 15 or 16 you get boys hanging around. My rule is no boys in the dugout.
Best of luck, you'll have fun making memories!!

Well, ended up 0-2. My 6 year old's team lost 16-10. They had a blast. It was 3 on 3 and man, they actually plated pretty good. Still working on that triangle offense image

My 10 year old's team lost 10-8. My daughter wasn't able to make it because she came down with the flu AGAIN. She looked like crap as well. The 10 year olds play 4 on 4 and I had 4 girls there. They played there butts off and I know they were tired at the end. I have one tall girl and three short girls. My daughter is in the middle but tough as nails. We had the ball for the last shot but missed. I was really proud of the way they played defense. I told them they were pit bulls.

I can't believe how much fun I had. I was jumping up and down, yelling out instructions the whole time with my hand over my mouth. I was really proud of both teams.

Well on to next weeks games. Hopefully we will be 1-1 after.
