Current State of the Chinese Coin Market?

Hi folks,

I'm a relatively casual collector of Chinese coins - the market has seemed to swing dramatically back and forth for the past few years. I am just wondering if any of the more experienced collectors/dealers have any thoughts on where the market currently stands? Are prices rising, falling, stable? Any guess on how the market will go in 2013?

Always interesting to hear any thoughts.

  • The market is in a slump right now, I am buying as many nice coins that are relatively reasonably priced. I think 20 years from now everything will look very cheap.

I agree and I think that any real asset will seem cheaper in 20 years given the mass production of paper by governments.

I think there are better values elsewhere

So do I. Exceptional copper 10 cash (66RB, 66BN etc) still bring moon prices, as do most pre revolution dollars in gem, but the frenzy of a couple of years ago, has swifted to exceptionally rare banknotes, some of which have been sold by Spink and keep on being sold. They have broken every record in the book. Definitely better values elsewhere

The market, even now, is already too high to enter. Those who had the chance to own some coins since 2005-2007 were the lucky ones. Also, many collections have been sold and a lot of collectors satisfied their passion. I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar move with the Russian market that hit its top 4 years ago and has been going downwards ever since. Shame that the best Russian collection of the 20th century has started last October and is still currently being sold by Sincona, instead of 4 years ago, there are some proofs to die for in it.

Always referring to classics and not gold or silver pandas of which I have no idea or any interest at.

If the market is down, WHY do i receive hard cover catalogs showing exclusively Chinese and Russian coins for auction from European Auction houses.?
Maybe, the next HOT market will be Newfoundland and Canada's Vickiy coins???
looking at the mintage numbers ... WHY NOT??
better go and stuff my pockets... lololo

Some of the Chinese coins price seems pretty high in recent HA auction, such as lot 26934, 26921, 26891, 20291, 20295, 20296, 20299, 20300 etc. Maybe Chinese coin price hit the bottom already.

Because even at their low, or near bottom, they are still bringing infinitely higher prices than Albania or Romania. image

Another country that brought much stronger prices than it used to , was Switzerland.

Finally, Heritage is not to be taken as a bible on the current prices. Example, a gold 1911 £5 NGC PR65 that sold for $6500, ie the same price that the entire gold set (half sov, sov, £2 and £5) had sold at Stack's two months ago, in grades PCGS PR64+DCAM to PCGS PR65DCAM and PR65 for the £5. There are certainly bargains out there for those willing to look for them.

Stack's is currently selling a 1908 C sovereign in PCGS SP65. Any guesses as to its final price?

    Edited to add:
    $11750 !!!

I always think SB price is much better for buyer than HA. HA might has a lot more dealer support or buy back than SB.

  • China Market OVERALL, down & stagnant. BUT there are pockets of strength (duh) & people out there,... that when

they see a nice coin... 2000 blossom/scallop ms70 silver dragon, they BUY! last year $1200 coin, retail

this past HA auction $1600 or so

Market is real & just in its infancy, but buy only for the long term &/or passion

OK OK let's get back to the coins. I agree with Dmitri you must look at the coins not the shiny round bullion. Bullion will always rise in value and Pandas will always be worth more than Philharmonics but that doesn't mean the market is swinging upwards for all China coins. OK I'm done being captain obvious ... sorry couldn't resist for some reason image

edited to add: over a 20 year period... BV will always be higher 20 years from now I didn't mean short-term flipping that's more akin to day trading on NASDAQ
