I cannot seem to find a definitive answer - is it the 3rd, 4th, or what?

Part of the confusion might stem from the fact that
Whitman published two versions of the 3rd edition,
    identical except for their covers.

The first cover is metallic silver-toned with a metallic
gold-toned image of the 1849 double eagle. The second
has a black field, also with the 1849 double eagle.

Oh, so you get your choice of a black slab or white slab cover for the book! image I do like the black background better for the gold piece, though.

This is a bit inaccurate. While there are two different third editions, one is leather while the other is in black boards. The silver-toned 'cover' is just the dust jacket to the regular third edition with the black cover.
