TTM Project - Dead Players

A friend of mine and I wanted to start a TTM project to try to get an entire set signed.

Will probably go with something cheaper from the 80s or 90s but before taking it on, we wanted to figure out what the more difficult ones would be regarding players that have passed. While there are some more obvious ones compared to others, I was wondering if anyone knew of a site that documented this.

Any information or recommendations is appreciated. Thanks.

on sportscollectors.net you can look up players by card set and it's usually good about them denoting whether they've passed and what their TTM success rate is. It's like $15/yr to join.

I've found that it is rather difficult to obtain TTM's from deceased players...

Seriously though, Michael's advice is excellent. However, the deceased players listed in the sets are not always accurate.

    That made me laugh.

Thank you both for the advice.

They make mistakes for sure but for modern stuff they're better than with the older obscure guys.

One other thing to keep in mind ... You may be shocked at the price of some of the cards from one year as compared to a prior year. For example, there are some players who may have been decent signers but died right after the set came out. Their prior cards might be only $2.00-$3.00 while the card from your set might be $50.00+.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I was just checking the site out. The free membership lets you look up the sets and they have the marked the players that have passed. Figured it wouldn't be 100% accurate but just wanted to get an idea of what we were taking on before we decided on the year.

Thanks. Figured would have to spend anywhere from $25 to $75 for some of the cards and I know a lot of the players request a donation.

Doug is right. You'll start to be amazed at the price someone will pay for a Win Rimmerswaal

By the way, I say that as someone willing to pay $500 for a signed 1971 Topps Wayne Maki card. HA!

A very popular set to build is the 87 Topps. The multiplayer cards can be killer though. I think in 87, it is Ricky Wright or some name like that who people pay hundreds for because he doesnt like to sign the card. There are also lots of guys who live in the Dominican or Venezuela who are really tough. I would also suggest joining sportscollectors.net...a great place to buy cards and get in on some private signings.

Let me know what set you decide on...I may have a few available to help you get things going.
