Advice on collecting 1957 Topps Baseball

Hi all!

I'm planning to start putting together a raw 1957 Topps Baseball set in VG grade. The only vintage sets i've completed are the '68 and '75 which are plentiful and relatively inexpensive in the EX to EX-NMT condition. Now, because funds are somewhat limited, would you first collect the high dollar cards (Mantle, Robinsons, Williams, Yankees) and then the commons or should it be the other way around?

If you have any other information about this set, please share.

Let the quest begin!!

Either way is fine.IMO the tough mid sreies is where I would start as they are more difficult to find.

I am putting together a 1960 and 1972 set. I am trying to trade other commons from the 60's and 7-'s that I have to reduce the amount of money I have to spend first. I am only buying the expensive cards now if I find amazing deals that I can't pass up. Other than that I figure I would go for the commons first to knock the easy cheap stuff out of the way.

  • Good info, thanks.

From what others have told me, that mid series is tough (265-352). Either way I go, this will be a 1+ year project, even in VG grade.

I would say you buy whatever best deals present themselves first. Know the general price of stars, difficult common cards, and easy commons in your condition range. Look at everything for sale and buy whatever the best deal is at the time. Individual easy commons will hardly ever be wise to buy a card at a time. Your best move would be to wait for a good deal on a larger group at a greatly reduced price. You will save a lot of money in relation to piecing them together a card at a time. The bigger the group the better as it will contain more and more tougher cards you won't have to buy on their own.

From a fiscal viewpoint, I'd think it best to buy the most expensive cards first. The Mantle, Williams, Clemente, Koufax, Aaron, etc., will likely go up in price at more quickly than the commons, or, conversely, will drop in value less quickly. That is, the big names will only get more expensive as time goes by, while the commons are likely to remain relatively stable. Also, if you decide to abandon the project in midstream, the stars will be easier to re-sell than the commons.

Anybody know why the mid-series is more difficult to find than the very highest numbers in 1957 Topps Baseball?

It's a much more enjoyable project when you are making progress - I'd start with the commons, which should be cheap in VG shape, while also looking for the stars. If you are concerned about centering, which is the main priority for me, then I would not buy the cards in lots. Another suggestion is to search eBay for PSA 4 cards for the stars. They are often in great shape except for a slight crease.

Here's a few I've found over the years:

  • Those are very nice cards. Thanks for all the suggestions!!
