The thread title was so poised and gave nothing away, yet when I noticed 55 replies I started searching feverishly for my seat belt. Don't know you, OP, but you've always been class personified and that's the proverbial icing on this gem mint cake. Likewise for handyman!

As a major Rickey fan this is awesome. You should talk about yourself in the third person in honor of Rickey. Congrats!

Great score but am I the only one that thinks it is crazy that someone who subs cards would sell a raw, mint Henderson without first having it graded? Folks can praise the seller's attitude as much as they want but he basically threw away $10k. Hopefully they had some sort of behind the scenes deal in place if it came back a 10.
That said very happy for the submitter, nice to see someone on the boards get a huge score on a sub.

ooooo, here comes analysis and cold hard truth.

i'm only going to speculate that Justin no longer needs a shoebox.
  • Wow!!! Are you kidding me? That is only the 11th PSA 10?!? That, then, is truly epic!! I am both jealous and happy for you!!! image
  • The thread title says you want to share the card with us....can I take it for the first year or two?

    Congrats!!!!

Congrats on the grade and major props to handy. I'm sure it stings like hades but you've handled the situation with a *very* classy attitude.

<< <i>It's all relative though, for some people $10k isn't that much to let slip like this ... for others it'd be devastating. >>

Yeah, I would fall under the devastating category... as in I would probably sell everything and quit the hobby. Both parties are good people though, and both deserve good things to happen to them.

    Congratulations!

It was a very class move by handyman, as Justin was very gracious to offer the lots of wax trays that he procured here on the boards. The poppage is the result of good karma based on Justin's actions. Good things do happen to good people.

    Agreed!!
He offered them to all of us at a very reasonable price as well!!

It's examples like this that make me really think hard about third party grading.

The differences between this card getting a 10 and a 9 are so slight, yet the difference in value is astronomical.

  • ClockworkAngelClockworkAngel Posts: 1,994 ✭✭✭
Yes, the money PSA just made for you is amazing. Really makes you think about this 3rd party grading stuff...

But regardless of all that, this is a great story and very inspirational. Conincidentally, I am doing a walkthrough at PSA later this week for the 1976T Brett PSA 9 I picked up from PWCC last month. My fingers are crossed and after reading this, I know miracles can happen!

And applause to handyman. I don't think I'd be as gracious LOL

    Congrats ! That is awesome.

I am thinking think that Handyman, like most of us, probably did not think this card would go 10 or else he would have submitted it himself.

    Ya think so? image

I kind of figured he's just a nice guy, knew it would be a 10, and wanted to give a fellow collector $10G

The white stuff on the surface is the scan, not on the card. It really only has a fish eye on the Green A's Banner and a small fisheye right under that banner

  • What a pull! Stunning Rickey and deserving of a 10. Always great to see something like this come out of a pack.

Bet BBCE phones are ringing off the hook today!

Can you re-post the before scan, Justin? I don't recall seeing it.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The packs these cards came from weren't from BBCE..

Tim's correct, these were not from BBCE. They were from a source of mine.

I want to thank each one of you for the kind words; this card is a great one and I'm proud to have it. With regards to Derek (handyman), he was awesome, and I tribute most of the success of this to him. He was very gracious to sell it back to me at my request. At the time, we were both very happy with the decision. We're going to look at his Rickey (the other one that he pulled), once it gets back from Beckett and then determine whether it should be sent in or not.

The card didn't ship out yesterday. I'll get it tomorrow. Not sure why PSA didn't ship it out yesterday. I'll post the scan then.

As far as selling, I'm probably going to hold onto it for awhile. Maybe have some fun with it and do the Rickey Topps Basic set.

stunningly clear.. I agree the back freaks will come out but unless it is mc on the back I don't care what the back looks like.. I never look at the back..

If the backs of cards sold product, they would look like the front

I posted a link to the Dmitri Young Rickey that sold last year. It's the only other Rickey 10 that I've seen. I think the centering on his was worse. He does have the same transparent fish eye on the front that mine does (upper left in the action photo).

Does anyone else have links to scans of other 1980 Rickey 10s?

    Justin

I have about 6 psa 8's and they all have that fishey on the top left of the photo, in fact I have never seen one without it

I got one graded a year or so ago and it had that little circle too. I think it is most likely on everyone.

I like the centering in yours better.

The Dmitri one also appears to have some additional fish eyes ... particularly the one that Rickey is staring at while in his stance, which in addition to all the other ones in the A's banner, IMO, detracts enough from the eye appeal of the card to drop it down to a 9. >>

Great point. I actually completely missed seeing that one.

that thing that looks like a stain in the upper left corner of the picture part of the card always threw me. It's like the guy at Topps spilled a little coffee on the original picture they used to make the plate, or something.

    Congrats Justin. Seriously!!
  • That D Young is quite OC. I'd have gotten an 8 if it were my sub. That's a topic for another thread though. Nice card . . .Your card is 10x better!
