Fake rare Bobby Orr bazooka card on ebay ?

I'm not saying that I'm 100% sure it's the fake one, but it looks like the one that was faked a few years ago.

Any experts on here who can say with 99% certainty that this is the fake one ?

1971 Bazooka Orr

  • I don't know if it is fake, but I agree the seller has a pretty good reputation, and I have had good luck with them in the past. If it is fake, I am sure they did not know about it.

    SOLD

    That didn't last long.

What would a card like this sell for in strong condition?

Totally fake and if it was real it would be about $2000 or more in that condition. The last Orr bazooka that sold at auction was in 2010 through Heritage. It was a beater in an sgc holder and I think it brought about $2500 but I'm not a member there and VCP is no help.

The colors are totally off on the card that just sold. Another telltale sign is a tape mark that almost always appears on the right border of the card. The boxes were taped closed on both ends so two of the three cards in the panel were ruined before they even sold.

On second thought it might be legit. It is a good fake if it is one. I still think the colours are off on his face but it is a more legit than I first thought. Why on earth they didn't slab it is beyond me.

The reason tampabaycards didn't get it graded before selling is that they only bought the card back on December 25, 2012 so they didn't have time to do it. With shipping time, they probably listed it the day it arrived and it sold that same day. Check out completed ebay item no. 321044532065, sold for $113.61.

Okay, now I call BS. That is a regional prototype issue that was only distributed in select parts of Quebec and Ontario. It is the rarest Bobby Orr card issued. It is almost impossible to get a set of these cards, let alone an Orr. There is virtually no way that it could end up in Milwaukee at a "lawn sale."

tampabaycards certainly knows enough about the hobby to tell the difference between original and authentic in most cases. Even if they didn't know the difference between a real and counterfeit version of this particular card, they still definitely have enough experience to know how to find a true expected value of a card and set a realistic sale price. There are enough other 1971 bazooka hockey that are slabbed and presently listed even if the Orr card is not one of them, so it is easy to get an idea of how much to hope for in sale price of an authentic one. Therefore, if they believed the card they bought on the cheap was authentic, then their resale flip price the next week would have either been a much much higher buy-it-now or it would have been an auction instead (or, they'd have sent it in for grading before selling it instead of flipping the same day they received it). I would agree that the evidence would imply that they bought the card cheap, probably hoping for a real one but found it to be a reproduction, and then dumped it quick to make it someone else's problem instead of filing a claim against the seller they bought from, rather than take the loss of $113. I too used to have a fairly good impression of them, but now I doubt their integrity...

Edit: the one in the OP does not come up on the completed listings search, and I only find it by using the link provided. If this means that the auction listing was just ended early by the seller, and not that the item was sold, then I would take back my earlier comments and instead feel that maybe this is a case of t-bay initially undervaluing their item, realizing it later after doing more research, and then pulling the listing in order to submit it for grading.

It is taking much longer these days for completed sales to post.

If that's the case that the card really sold at that price, then there may just be something shady here...

Ebayer "jla33" is the one who won the card, based on the feedback left by tampabay-cards.

There's no telltale signs the card's a fake based on the enlarged scan. The printing would need to be looked at under magnification to see if it's solid but it looks good in the scan. The Heritage Authentic example may as well be called NM by 1971 Bazooka standards and sold for $3100. The Ebay example is severely damaged, recolored, and if submitted for grading would come back altered. An altered card with poor appearance would typically be priced no more than about 10-15% of what a normal looking card would be worth. Real rarity would push the value up but the condition will scare a lot of people away from paying too much for the card. It was bought cheap and flipped for a fair profit. Nothing wrong with that.

In the 8 years I've intensely collected Orr cards, this would be, if real, the second Orr Bazooka to sell publicly in any condition. It is an insanely difficult card to find and $400 is an absolute steal. Minor stars, like my Henri Richard, sell for that much in low grade. I stand by my $2k estimate in that condition. If the seller is so widely respected and the card was real, I am surprised they left that much money on the table.
