Question about advertisments on the CU Message board website
![dtkk49a](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/Rice_80728158441.jpg)
The other day I was on the Home Depot website looking at kitchen faucets. The next day I was on Amazon looking at books. Today I am on this website and the advertisments are for Kitchen faucets and Amazon. How is this happening? I feel like my privacy is being invaded. Is CU doing this?

<< <i>The hilarious part of this is that the banner at the top of this thread page on my screen is an ad for faucetdirect.com, lol.. >>
Mine is NOW faucetdirect.com also... lol

That could of course create other inconveniences. I'm surprised the OP hasn't noticed this with various other sites as it happens everywhere these days.

That's pretty much it right there. If you feel that your privacy has been violated, then you need to stop using the internet, because your ISP keeps detailed traffic logs that can be turned over to the Feds if they present a subpoena for it.
Nothing is private. Former CIA Director David Petraeus figured that out the hard way.

This is untrue... If your ISP receives a subpoena, they will START maintaining detailed traffic logs for you for a predetermined period of time. If I created a log for myself, I would create several MBs of activity per day. The internet is running at the rate of 500TB/sec (over 43 Million TBs/day)... it would be physically and financially impractical for any ISP to maintain logs.

You should read this. There's no law about how long an ISP must store data, but some store it for over a year.
As for simply blocking the ads so you don't have to look at them, I use the AdBlock plugin for Google Chrome.

Dude, you don't know what you're talking about. Some fights aren't worth fighting. Why does everyone have to be right on this Board? I think I'm going to start talk about open heart surgery now in a very authoritative manner and continue to talk about it until everyone knows I'm right!
To your point... my point was that not all ISPs keep "detailed" logs... as a matter of fact, NO ISP keeps detailed logs. It's not cost-effective, and is a very poor business decision. Some keep cursory logs, but that is the most an ISP will keep until subpeonaed to complete detailed logs. I've been doing this for DoD, DoS, NSA, DEA, CIA, FBI, Xe (Blackwater), Secret Service, USMS, etc., for over 30 years. Would you like to use your arbitrary article as your method of challenge against my three decades of real-life experience?
And just to clarify - the Amazon adverts that I see on the CU website are advertising the exact books that I was checking out on the Amazon website, so I know its not just coincidence.
I do have one question for LLAFOE - if the ISP gets a request to collect data, doesn't your ISP have to notify you?

published interview with the CEO of an ISP about the ISP's practices vs llafoe's "because I say so."

Your ISP has no obligation to you, aside from providing ISP services and protecting your PII (Personally Identifiable Information).

It's obvious you don't understand what is written in the article... MOST ISPs don't keep ANY user logs. The few that do, ONLY maintain IP logs. This is NOT detailed; it's barely cursory. IPs are Level 3... I need Level 2 (MAC) to confirm a specific computer is accessing an IP. I can easily "join" anyone's network and do nefarious things on your network. Even with MACs, I can proxy your MAC and appear to be you. What the limited ISPs maintain is only a very high-level starting point to justify a subpoena. Once a subpoena is in effect, an ISP will capture MACs and packets. Then, and ONLY then, would these logs be admissible in court.
I'm afraid that llafoe will sick his DoD, DoS, NSA, DEA, CIA, FBI, Xe (Blackwater), Secret Service, USMS, and YMCA buddies on me "Person of Interest" style.
