Mantle Rookie

Does this sound or looks legitimate?

Mantle Rookie
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

Too many red flags. Zero feedback seller (check), Dead spouse (check), found cards in attic/closet (check), no paypal (check), auction run for the smallest amount of time possible instead of the longest amount of time possible so more eyes can see it (check). If it were me, I would stay away, as you are asking for heartache if you proceed.

I sent her an email asking if I could pick this up in person if I win. She agreed but would want a cashier's check for "tax purposes."

    Pass.

Very slick attempt I'll say, right down to the imperfect grammar. But as stated above, this listing hits all the usual and classic notes of a scam.

She obviously didn't get great advice about how to do this the best way.

Already emailed about looking at cards in person, as I am headed to NJ tonight. Says "she is now located in Philly"
  • But the cards are with her lawyer in NY State.

Best line: "Im not too comfortable with paypal on this type of transaction". I also like this: "he has over 1000 graded cards that he bought over his lifespan" with 'has' in the present tense. Where are all the other cards?

I have a medical background and the thing that screams bogus to me was the death by testicular cancer and husband of 35 years. While testicular cancer can be terminal when caught too late, it is typically found before the age of 30, it is not a cancer typically discovered late in life.
  • He had 1000 cards but I will only put this one on. Ha,Ha,Ha.

Any chance she'd take a cashier's check drawn on a Nigerian bank??

Also, she mentioned the costs left behind. Does a guy that drops this amount of coin on a Mantle card, along with a 1,000+ graded cards as mentioned, not have a job with decent medical insurance or make enough to buy personal coverage, but has an estate attorney?

  • fkwfkw Posts: 1,766 ✭✭
I guess the guy that croaked was a so called "well known hobby figure"??? hmmmm lol

looks like the same exact card with same exact scan was sold less than 3 months ago, for a record $55K

very common Topps card graded PSA-7 sells for $55K

Some people are uninsurable. Regardless of how much money you have, insurance companies only want the top risk. Not saying that the lady is being honest here but the story behind having medical bills and a nice collection of cards does not make this a bogus story.

The same scan does make it a bogus story.

Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • I am just recently getting back into the Card Collecting game and thins might sound a bit naieve, but if she is willing to meet in person, with the lawyer then what is there to loose. Could u let eBay know of the issue and then if it turns out fake eBay wont pitch a fit? Hell if the positive is picking up a great looking 52 Mantle for a decent price and the negative being one bad ebay complaint... i'd say the positive out weighs the negative here. But let me know if I am missing something.

FKW, with the 1951/53 Mantle exhibit you showed, how can you tell if it's issued in 51 or 53?
