Great hockey. Better then watching the NHL in my opinion.
USA's hockey development is on the rise. We now have as many kids in youth hockey as Canada does.
We've won the most World Juniors in the past 5- 10 years then any other country. We just won in Russia, and
we won on Canadian soil a few years back.
There were many interesting stories to this years team. Our goalie Gibson is from Pittsburgh. As many know, Mario Lemieux caused the amount
of ice rinks in the Pittsburgh area to rise from 4 (in 1985 when he arrived) to about 33 today.
Also, former basketball player Popeye Jones has his son (6-4 205lb. Seth) as one of our top defensemen. Seth Jones
will probably go in the Top 5 of the draft next year (some say he'll go #1). He could be the 1st African-American to go #1 in the Draft.
Lots of good stuff happening with USA hockey. We had the best goalie in this years World Junior tournament, and we had the two past Conn Smythe trophy
winners with Tim Thomas and Jonathan Quick.

Best chance the Leafs have had at a cup run in years! LOL

Oh, the one Canada doesn't send it's best players too! Gotcha

Oops. Thanks. That's the one.

I find most countries pick at least one league to NOT send their best players... I wasn't aware Canada chose the U18 league. Thanks for the heads-up!

Canada just lets their players finish off the CHL and College seasons instead. And then sends their squad to the U18 Junior World Cup ...where they've won Gold 15 of the last 17 tournaments. I do not believe the US sends their best players to that one though, lol, go figure. U18 is not exactly something I would want to watch personally, but winning anywhere is always a good sign for the program.
Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia
I can't see any other country break that top 4. Anyone ?

I'm perplexed . . . The US has won 6 of the last 8 IIHF U18 Gold medals, including the last 4 going into this year's tournament. Canada hasn't won an IIHF U20 Championship since 2009 (the US has won 2 of the last 4 tournaments). Also, Canada has not won the IIHF World Championship since 2007. I'm confused about where you are getting your results. Or maybe I'm just thinking of something completely different.

From their website...

When most people talk Juniors it is not U18, it's U20. Canada plays with their all star team in the U18 Junior World Cup (not a IIHF tourney) so their players can finish off their seasons with their home teams.
As the IIHF's tournament conflicts with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL)'s playoff season, the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament is the only competition of the two to which Canada is able to send its best under-18 team.

About the IIHF tourney...
Most countries send their best team to this tournament, however, Canada may not send its best players as in April some CHL junior teams are still involved in junior playoffs.[1] Instead Canada's top U18 players involved in junior or university playoffs in North America play in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August.[1] ...From the IIHF U18 Wiki page
it shot it to Carolina and then squashed it with the Stanley Cup....

yeah its that sport which is popular in 3 continents not just one
I didn't really care about the NHL because I've been watching lots of minor hockey, and some senior mens at nearby arenas.

I have to agree with you. It was a real shame they moved that team out of there. I can only think of a very few ex whalers that are still playing in the league now
EAC 6024
p.s. I live not too far from Raleigh, and have been to a few Hurricanes games over the years. While I agree it does not seem like a natural fit for the Southeastern US, it does seem like they have built a rather solid and committed fan base in the state. I know quite a few RedNecks who are very dedicated hockey fans now--and I would bet they never followed hockey at all before the Whalers team relocated down here.
What were the attendance averages for the Whalers home games versus the Hurricanes home games? The few times I have been, it always seemed like close to a full house. The year Carolina won the Stanley Cup, the whole state seemed to be celebrating--it was fun even for us "semi-casual" hockey followers to enjoy!
<< <i>I don't collect hockey but the Cup (Exquisite) product intrigues me. Is the 2011-12 product worth a rip? >>
i would say it is, lots of nice rookies in that set
<< <i>I wonder if those loser dweebs on the "Sports Talk" forum will ever learn about this-=-LOL. I bet if they started their own thread on this, it would only get 5-6 replies. When will those fools learn and just abandon that forum--"CARDS AND MEMORABILIA" RULES!

It has nothing to do with whether or not Carolina deserves a team or attendance vs attendance? The bottom line was we
were lied to by Ponytail Pete and held hostage!! He asked for 11,000 season tickets and we got him that number!!
He then said that wasn't enough (because he didn't think Hartford would do it) so he asked for 12,000 and that happen thanks to
Travelers, Aetna and Cigna!! He then said 13,000 will do it with a brand new state of the art arena . He is a loser and he can take
his little buddy Bettman and go for a long hike off a cliff for all I care....
