Anyone ever collected just ONE card for a period of time???

I am considering devoting some time and money to just one card. Anyone ever done this, i.e., bought several copies of it, variations, different Professional grades, errors, etc??? Was it rewarding???

At one time I attempted to collect all 25 of a hockey insert. It was the 2004-2005 SP Authentic triple auto card of Heatly, Kovalchuk, and Lehtonen. I wanted to get all 25, although I realized this wouldn't actually happen, I wanted to see how close I could get. I made it up to 7 of them and now I have 7 cards (some of which I grossly overpaid for) that I no longer want. Probably the most regrettable thing I have done as a collector.

I've been collecting the 2005 Francisco Garcia Ultimate /250 auto rc for many years now. So far I am up to 60-65 out of the 250 made. Funny thing is, I hardly have any of his other cards. I just like this card.

    Some good advice here image

Slang & Oddity- that's the type of devotion I'm looking for. It just seems like a "collector" type of thing to do, even if it makes no "sense".

I have with a modern card and a vintage card. But I wasnt prepared for the inflation that came with it even though I did enjoy it. Part of the problem was (as ocd as collectors in general are) I went after EVERY card that came up. One of the cards I collected onlg graded so the pop reports drove me to get them all. If you collected something modern with a serial number as cool as a serial numbered lot would be you would be competing against set builders as well. I wouldnt pick a card that is too old because youll have a pretty tough time finding modern cards which have been buried in collections. I say do it but set and stick to perameters... Ie under $50 etc.

Back about 5 years ago , there were some " serious" McGwire collectors running loose on these boards . The guy ( jgarcia11 ) was trying to corner the refractor market and was fairly hostile with those who thought otherwise . These are easily found with the search function .

There are those with more technical savy that could post some of these " az-clown " threads .------ Sonny

LOL, I sincerely hope this thread doesn't turn into something like that. No plans to corner the market with what I'm looking at image

RudeDawg ... what card were you thinking about collecting? As has been said, as long as you keep it to a card that is not too expensive, it sounds like a real fun idea ... that is what collecting is all about! GOOD LUCK.

Edited to add: BTW SLANG, that is some collection. Good luck with the rest of them.

Thinking about doing the 1987 Topps Future Star Bo Jackson. I started collecting in 1987 when I was a kid and that Topps set was the first I started with. To me, no one was bigger than Bo and I have always been a sucker for the "Future Stars", "Rated Rookie" and other designations. I came to realize that, in spite of it being mass produced and from the Junk Era, it's my all time favorite card.

It also makes it a little more fun with both the base card and the Tiffany version as well. I was looking at getting Graded examples in every possible grade from multiple companies, errors, racks/cellos with it OT, etc. I found quite a few different ways to possibly collect it. The Sabo Collection thread gave me an itch to pick up a few hundred raw examples........just to do it. It's convenient the card only fetches .50 - $1.00 raw. image

As I said earlier, there won't be any aspirations of cornering the market on this one!

Thanks for the input and comments guys.

I'd think that the Billy Ripken 89 Fleer would be a fun one. Tons of variations, and a webpage to go with it!

There was a 900 count lot on ebay not long ago. Sold for close to a couple hundred bucks.

At one time I had about 250 1990-91 Fleer Rookie Sensation Tim Hardaways and well over 1,000 of his regular 1990-91 Fleer card. I loved that Blue insert Rookie Sensation set. It came only in Cello Packs, and was considered super rare. And Hardaway was just starting to take over the league in Golden State. The blue card shot up to about $20-25 at one time. I sold some of them, but kept too many of them and they took a dump, like most other modern day cards. The regular fleer went to about $4-5 at one time
