Fake Australian 1923 Half Penny in Latest Heritage Auction

The Australian 1923 half penny in the link below is an altered date. It's been altered from a 1933. The giveaways are the curved base lettering on the reverse and the alignment of the 3 in the date. A genuine 1923 half penny has flat based lettering and the left of the 3 in the date aligns between two rim-beads. Clearly the example in the Heritage auction has curved base lettering and the left of the 3 aligns with a rim bead. So it's a fake.

What did Heritage say when you contacted them?

Still waiting for a response. Thought it was worth posting here in case anyone was bidding on it. As far as altered date 1923 1/2d's go it's not even a very good one.

Not surprised. One wonders if these auction houses actually have someone look at the items before they are listed.

    Is the slab genuine?

Yes. NGC appear to have been caught by this too.

It amazes me that collectors already bid over $1500 for this altered coin, they clearly dont know their stuff.
pictures are detailed enough to spot the alteration imho,

That was a very good catch! Yet another example of what has become cliché - buy the coin and not the slab. The TPG is going to take a hit on this one - eventually.

I hope you get a response - and soon. I've contacted auction houses (not Heritage, though) about suspect or incorrect offerings in the past and either have been ignored or have had my "credentials" questioned.

In Fine CV is AU$2250. VF is $4500. That coin is probably gF. It's the second best known keydate coin of the entire Australian series (behind the 1930 penny).

Well, it looks like that lot has been withdrawn.

    Good job, mnemtsas2!

Great news on the withdrawal of the fake! I echo Mac's comment above - nice job, mnemtsas2!

I am pleased that they were open to the possibility. Mistakes are made, and they certainly owned this one, to their credit.

Yes, well done by Heritage, I am glad it's been pulled. I cannot take all the glory for this, another collector here in Australia told me the coin might be a dud and I concurred and posted the information here.

...then that's probably why they withdrew it.
