    1991 Traks Jeff Gordon

He is not in the 1991 Pro Set or Maxx Set.

    << <i>How about Prince Fielder's 2002 UD Prospect Premieres? That's his only MLB card in 2002. >>

Good one. I'd take it, but Beckett calls it an XRC, and I'm not sure how the OP feels about those. >>

<< <i>2002 Upper Deck Prospect Premieres is a 109-card set released in November, 2002. Like the previous year's set, it was designed to compete with Topps' Bowman brands, and features NO current Major League players. As a result, this product is NOT licensed by the MLB Players Association and none of the cards are considered "true" rookie cards -- although the set is licensed by MLB and the players are depicted in their Major League uniforms. >>

1996 Tiger SI for Kids is a great one pick and I'm surprised it didn't come up earlier. However, not a pack pulled card.

Pettitte is good for 93 but not sure if he qualifies as a mega star (definitely a star).. 44th all time strikeouts, 51st wins, only individual awards are 3 AS squads, 3.86 career era, 4+ era 9 times. Looking through his stats found this interesting... between 2006-2008, he was paid 48 Million $, that's more than a million per win, done with a 4.26 era.

    Still Mariano 92 Bowman?

    << <i>Dennis Rodman 1988 Fleer >>

And to think it was issued in his third year in the NBA, would have loved to see him in the 1986 Fleer set but glad he was skipped in 87 and included in the awesome 1988 set!
  • He probably doesn't qualify as a mega-star, but he's a future hall of famer and the most clutch player to ever play his position:
    1997 Pacific Philadelphia Adam Vinatieri
    Currently Buying:
2004 Tommie Harris SPX Printing Plate (White Whale will pay top $$$)
1994 SP Football Die Cuts PSA 10s

    Ray Lewis 1996 Bowmans Best
  • Great call on David Robinson for Basketball. The low numbers 89 Hoops was his only RC since the other was In Action. I would certainly consider him a mega star. I think I may rip a box of those over the weekend.

how about Miguel Cabrera's Topps Traded card?

I was going for the fact that he's one of the "Core Four," and that's pretty mega-starish in itself.

    << <i>how about Miguel Cabrera's Topps Traded card? >>

He's also got a Topps Traded Chrome card.

If we're going for strict Beckett rookie card rules...

2008 Topps Heritage Pablo Sandoval. It's his only "official" rookie card and has no parallels. His other cards are either unlicensed, "prospect cards," or mail-in inserts.

So.... does a "true rookie" for this thread need both MLB and MLBPAA licensing?

He also said "mega-star", which throws a monkey wrench in the discussion. Pabloval is no "mega-star". Neither are most of the players mentioned in the thread.

    He's a mega-star in my area.

How do you define "mega-star" then?

<< <i>Strictly for Basketball, can anybody top the 1989 Hoops David Robinson. I know he has a card in the later series of Hoops, but that is his "In Action" card, and may not be considered his rookie? >>

As it turns out, David Robinson's first card is from the 1986 Merchante set (from Spain), card #150 listed as D. Robinson. Tough card to find, and extremely difficult to find in high-grade as the rest of the world generally glues cards into albums. Rookie Card vs. First Card debate is up to each collector's taste. I personally collect first cards.

I see a "mega-star" as a player who transcends being a local favorite and is a national superstar. Derek Jeter, Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, Bryce Harper, Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro Suzuki, Miguel Cabrera, David Wright, Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Roy Halladay, C.C. Sabathia, Johan Santana, Mariano Rivera, Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander, Felix Hernandez, David Price, etc.

Pablo Sandoval doesn't belong on a list with these players. I like Pablo and he is a good player, but no.

How does one calculate "national prominence" or "transcendence" stats.

National advertising campaigns? Cereal boxes? Video game covers?

You really don't understand that there is a difference between star and superstar/mega star?

So, hype is the difference. Ok.

I understand that Panda isn't a national star. Ok, I get it. If he was a NY Yankee, he might be a mega-star, since everything in NY seems to get it's hype inflated.

Not to mention the fact that he has 8 true RCs and 16 total NFL-licensed cards released in 1996.

No, he wouldn't be a mega-star. He's a fine player but, really, is barely a star, let alone a mega-star.
