How to get an erroneous PCGS cert number corrected
I am trying to get an erroneous PCGS certification number corrected. The number used to be correct on the PCGS cert verification, but since a year or so ago the number comes back as an entirely different coin (needless to say, not mine)
I sent a request to PCGS to do this -- including a picture of the coin in its PCGS holder -- (with, of course, the correct cert number) and the 'Customer Service' people tell me the only way to get this done is to send the coin to PCGS requesting a reholder; and then applying for a refund for the fees and shipping costs. The coin is pretty valuable so I am not inclined to send the coin back & forth to Calif just to correct their own database error.
Any recommendations on how to get this done?
BTW: The PCGS cert number also does check out on the CAC verification page.

Edit - they do have to reholder it and change the tag.
<< <i>It's what's called a technical error - and it's their error. PCGS has fixed a few for me with only shipping costs.

Depending on the value of the coin, shipping charges ain't worth it sometimes
I did this once, but shouldn't have.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

<< <i>I had the same problem. After talking to customer service I shipped the coin back (at their request) and a month later I got it back in a new holder. I wanted to keep it in the old holder but they said they couldn't do that. To my simple way of thinking they should have just made a change in their data base. But what do I know...
If there are two coins with the same cert, I don't think they can fix on in the database without breaking the other.

I have the same situation, wrong cert number - not in their files.
I was told to send it back and then apply for a refund. I'll be in
Orlando next week and I'll hand them the coin in person.
They will reholder the coin, assign a cert number and mail the
coin back to me at no charge.
Sometimes, it's just a minor mechanical error - and they can
correct it without seeing the coin. I can't figure out how they
can handle a problem one way and not do the same thing again
for the other coin.
Don't worry about getting reimbursed, their customer service is
"Top Flight". Send the coin Registered and fully insured. When you fill
out the submission form, cross out the $8.00 Handling Fee, mark the
return shipping fees as Zero $ 0.00 - and the type of service as "Free
Cert. Review".
Fill out the submission form with the current coin PCGS number, the
date and mint, the denomination, the current grade, the existing cert
number and the declared value.
I made mention on the form that I tried registering the coin but the PCGS
Registry System kept advising me the cert number is in error.
PCGS customer service is sending me back up correspondence to attach
to the submission form.
Good luck, I'm sure it'll all work out for you.
