71 Rollie Fingers PSA 7 potential regrade - Opinions Requested

I picked this up on the electronic bay on NYE and am pleased with the card. I bought a couple raw last year and have had little success so I find this well worth the $40. My scanner is not the best so I will contend that corners and sides look great and the back is in great shape and better centered.

Is it worth a review? Crackout and re-sub? Your opinions are welcome and valued.

very very sharp card but i think its in the proper case. Print and centering make it a high end 7.

I've been collecting 1971 PSA 7s for a while. This is very nice for the grade. I could see it bumping and I don't think the centering would prevent a higher grade. Nice card!

  • I'd try to crack and re-sub. Worst case it comes back a 7, think it has an outside shot at an 8. Big upside to the risk.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • If the color is as washed-out as it appears in the scan, leave it alone. If that's not the case in hand, I'd think it has a good chance.

Is it worth it financially, though? Looks like it's about a $30-$40 card in PSA 7. What does an 8 go for?

  • I think most graders would call it an 8 but you could get one that makes centering more of a priority and he could say "7". If it were me I'd crack it/send it in again.

Walter - color is solid. Added a couple higher grades for comparison. I have not seen an 8 for sale but guess the difference is significant.

    Just an FYI ...

    VCP in "7" = $30.00

    VCP in "8" = $180.00

Crack and re-sub. It is close enough to an 8 that it is worth a shot.

Ummmmmm...... yeah. That'd be worth it, then.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks gentlemen. I swore I wasn't going to re-up with PSA until they cleaned up their yard - or at least my October group sub grades popped. Might have to take a plunge.

Yah I'd gove it another shot. Top to bottom centering is marginal so it just depends on the grader. There's enough upside to make it worth your while.

This is another one of those cards where eye appeal and technical centering don't agree because the team name sits lower on the card than for the majority of '71's. As a result, there's more border space on top than the size of the bottom border would otherwise suggest. I certainly think it has the eye appeal for an 8.

    Compare these two:

There doesn't seem to be much uniformity to the spacing between the different lines on '71's, so exact centering measurements don't always reflect eye appeal.

That is a very tough card in PSA 8. It was one of the final cards I picked up to finish my Black is Black set on the Registry.

I would definitely crack it and resubmit it.

Don't waste your time with an upgrade request.

I would crack and resubmit. I have had fluctuations as much as two grade points with crack and resubmits on grading 71s.

I vote crack and resubmit as well.

That being said, I think it is a good idea having got opinions beforehand. I've cracked and resubmitted a few cards before and had great luck with it, getting a positive grade bump each time. However, on my most recent take at it, I had 2 vintage items, one from 1949 and one from 1960, that on the first go around got a PSA 5 and a 6. I was absolutely positive they should both be 7's so I did the crack/resub and hoped for the best. Got them back this week: former 5 became a no grade evid. of trim. (I definitely can't find evidence of trimming on it!) and the 6 went down to a 5. So, I'm going to end up sending them back in for a 3rd time at some point, hoping instead to at least regain the initial grades.
