serial number mystery

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,042 ✭✭✭✭✭
Of my 751 PCGS-holdered coins I have, I just noticed some odd things about the serial numbers:
-- none start with 8.
-- only one starts with 3
-- only two start with 5 or 9
-- only five start with 4.
-- only 14 start with 6

This seems far beyond the realm of chance. Does anyone know if there's a reason for this?
When in doubt, don't.

Do most start with a "7"?

    Edited to add:
If so, I think we're onto something here but we'll have to communicate (i.e.: whisper) via a secured land line. . .

Pat: No, the overwhelming majority start with 1, but there are also a lot with 2.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Tread lightly, my brother.
You don't want to be added to the "list".

Dennis: I believe that PCGS reserves serial numbers starting with the numeral "5" for coin show walk-through priority grading, referenced from the following.

Here's a link to a previous PCGS Serial Number thread that may be helpful on this topic.

    .
the 25,000,000th coin that was graded has 25000000 as the cert number per the thread for that topic, so there must be some relation to the cert number that reflects in the cert number what order the coins were graded in.

although that 1794 sp 66 has the cert numb ending in 1794 so that throws off the first theory to an extent.

when we get coins back the cert numbers are usually sequential so we are back to the first theory after all

    image

after looking at pcgs 1.0 through 4.0 we see really high cert numbers so that discounts the first theory yet again!

i think maybe some master masons may have been responsible for decoding their cert number system. crack it and find a rare code leading to a treasure trove of gold ingots!!!

    i'm in, anyone else?

we may need a cryptographer, cartographer oh never mind.
    .
edited to add: since i don't know what the "list" is, i cannot restrict knowing what not to say/do which makes me think the only safe thing to do is nothing, and well i'm not sure that is acceptable, although i don't know the possible inferred consequences of being on said list, so without further information to go on, other than the heretofore warning, i know not what to do! also, i can't imagine that if i'm not on the list already, that anything i can do subsequently would garner enough merit to ensure my place on the list.

I was always under the impression(from old threads and the HRH QA) that the numbers assigned were random.

    "only 14 start with 6"

Are those old "rattler holders" ?
My only rattler starts with a 6 and
has a 7 digit cert number.

I hope this does not start a holder craze for odd-ball cert numbers? image

No rules mean they do what they want. And what were rules at one time may not apply now.

Is this true whether they are 7 or 8 digit cert numbers? I assume that the ones that start with zero would have been 7 digit numbers without it.

I have about 100 coins that have serial numbers starting with 0... yes, they are either current or old 7-digit numbers.
    When in doubt, don't.

I think it has to do with the number on the PCGS submission number sheet. I get one series for the coins submitted from preprinted forms, usally in the 2 series, and another set when submitting from a submit form I print out from the PCGS site.

Not true for PCGS but that is used at NGC.
