What is up with this 1923 SA 1 Penny?

I have had this for a while and am afraid to sell it because I do not know how to. Is is it 'blackened'? I realize my photos stink, but is there a way to discern whether it has been retuned or is it the case that these all look this way?

Thanks for any input.

  • Hard to tell the color from your photo-but the coin is bronze which does tend to turn black when it ages. Think of early great britain farthings. Looks like it might have had a swipe with a cloth at one time in the past. However-not distracting. Has low mintage of 91,000-Krause has it listed at $20 in xf. I would be interested if you would like to part with it. Nice coin, all in all. Thanks for sharing pictures.

Actually, the photos are pretty good.

The blackened pieces should be much blacker than your coin, at least based on the image. Beyond that, I can't tell you exactly what you have, but someone more familiar with the series probably can.

I thought that the coin would be darker, but the color is really off. -Dan
