Sports Cards That Every Collector Should Have In Their Own Collection

Try to stick to one card at a time please.

NOTE: Grades are whats not important in this thread - just the card in general.

I'll start off with one of the most iconic cards. Feel free to let us know whether you agree or not with the choices but keep the cards coming everyone.

Agreed on Griff. Picked it up early on when I got into graded cards.

    Some other cornerstone card suggestions...

Everyone should have a rookie card of the greatest closer in baseball history . . . even better when signed "Enter Sandman."

  • Matty, great cards so far and I agree with all of your choices, but what I meant was - post 1 card and let others chime in. Give others a chance to put some up as well. I'm sure we all can post 50 cards that we know belong if we really wanted to.

Ah I see. Misread it, perhaps due to holiday imbibing!

The following didn't make it in Joe Orlando's Top 250:

    1948 Chuck Bednarik
    1975 Robin Yount
    1984 Donruss Don Mattingly
    1989 Fleer Bill Ripken
    1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera

We'll need to remove those from this thread! image

Meh. I'm not much for universal cards for collections, but if you were a kid in the 80s and early 90s, then you may have lusted over this card at one time or another:

Are all of these cards from your guys' personal collection or just general pictures?
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
one from my personal stash, no doubt only a TRUE hobbyist would know or care..... image

That Will was huge. He put up some great numbers early on.

Pix I posted are my cards.

Re: Joe's book (which my dad was just perusing here at my place) if we had to pick only 250 then pre war would bump out more modern yet nostalgic picks-- alas in this thread we have no limit! Love that book.

Along lines of chicken special, I remember that Bo Score special was big back in the day.

Seems the mods have had some editing fun as of late, so deleting the likes of Bednarik, Rivera, Mattingly and the rest shouldn't be an issue.

"Should" - may be a strong word - recommendation? Sure.

I think Dave's RC would fit nicely into any collection of star players.

Great choice. The easy ones are the big HOF rookies. Need more much deeper choices like this.

  • I still have the Beckett with the bo b/w on the cover and a newspaper article titled "Bo Know Counterfits" from the Knoxville TN paper about people counterfitting these cards. Brings back good memories. I agree a must have.

HUGE fan of the Bird Magic. In my
humble opinion, a must-have. These also, in any grade. Have to post them as a pair; to me they go together like Brett and Yount 75s...

I love the score Bo Jackson card. I was kinda young but can remember that it was a popular card to have back then. I think it's underrated, should be up there with jordan's Nike promo card. Lol

I do not own this one. The one in my '67 set is a "5". For those of us in our 50s (54), I would have to say one of THE best pitchers we saw growing up. (THE MICK was always #1 to me, but listing his Rookie here is not realistic. Even in low grade, it's not something that everyone can afford to have in their collection.)

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby . . . a football card made an appearance on Page 1.
  • That Rickey Henderson rookie IS A MUST.

Also, we cant leave out "The Rockets" true rookie card either.

Great choices so far; Rickey, Seaver, Rocket-- also Puckett from that same set...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and drop Canseco Rated Rookie and McGwire USA Team. I was a huge Eric Davis fan too but he's probably too under the radar.
  • I feel this is the greatest baseball card ever made! Bowman was a head of their time with the vivid photography, clean card, the "pure card"
Unfortunately, this is not my card:

Thanks! It took awhile to find a nice, clean VG-EX copy with good centering. The chase was most of the fun, which is what's great about the hobby.

Wishing nothing but the best for the new year to everyone here!
