    I believe the denomination is correct, as stated on the coin.

    Okay, am I the only one who's brain twisted this into "One can not simply walk into Moi-dore" (Moi as in the French 'moi')????

    Sigh, I'd like to blame too much egg nog, but it's 7 am and all I had last night was a small glass of wine!

    Oddly....No.

    It is a 4800 Reis coin, it took about 150 years (from 1688 to the late 1830's) and a decimalization reform to the Portuguese Silver and Gold coins(*) worth their face value, until then:

    Coins with denomination:

    20000 = 24000
    10000 = 12000
    4000 = 4800
    2000 = 2400
    1000 = 1200
    400 = 480 (Both Gold and Silver)
    200 = 240
    80 (LXXX) = 100
    40 (XXXX) = 50

    Undenominated coins of 100 and 50 Reis where revalued at 120 and 60 Reis and only the 20 Reis coins maintained their value.

    ...so far, none of the Krause editions are 100% correct on this matter, the most common mistakes are stating that the LXXX is still 80 Reis, altough they name it a Tostão (Tostão = 100 Réis) and maintaining the 2000 and 4000 values when they should be 2400 and 4800 Reis.

    (*) - This not affects the value of the undenominated gold "escudos" coins and its fractions created during D. Joao V reign, only the
    "moeda/cruzado" issues.
