question about PSA population reports

How long does it take PSA to update pop reports? If I get results from a submission and then I look in the pop report, can I assume the population includes what was just graded?

It updates daily. If your sub pops today you will see it in the pop report tomorrow.

For 9s, that is most certainly true

It depends on what sets you collect. Some cards are tough in a 9 and if that is the top grade it most certainly matters.

They update next day. Pointless or not, they certainly have a significant impact on market value.

I wouldn't say population reports are "pointless". However I would say they are inaccurate due to the volume of crack opens and resubmissions. But what can PSA do about it other than edit the data if collectors send back the labels from holders they cracked open? I use the population reports regularly but with the understanding the numbers are inflated on many cards due to the issue mentioned above. The exception is a card that has a low population in high grade such as "8" or "9" to start with, I consider those numbers pretty accurate. It is high risk to crack open a low population card in hopes of resubmitting and getting an upgrade. Review yes...resubmission no.

I can tell you from first hand experience, as can many collectors on this Board, that the pop report drives much of the value of vintage material in high grade.

You know, with all the discussion about the validity of the pop report, SMR values, etc., I think it is important to keep in mind that it is all just information. Information that can be valuable to you as a collector and certainly good to know. But each is just a snapshot in a collection data points you can use to help you make decisions about buying and selling sports collectibles. This type of information has its flaws and inaccuracies but it can also have value if you use it carefully and appropriately.

  • Pointless? In my opinion, the PSA population report is the most useful resource in the hobby. To truly benefit from it, one must have a good working knowledge of the hobby and be able to interpret the data properly.

Nothing is absolute, but the pop report is a helluva guide. The grade of the card is not even absolute as we know there are fluctuations in that. Not all grades are created equal within a number...some nines are better than others.
