Been Awhile since I've dealt with this ??

Morning,

Guy has a bunch of .99 auctions for 1962 Civil War News AB&C Non Sport Cards Raw, so I bid this morning on 17 of them win them all. I had read ahead of time to see if he combined shipping, didn't specifically say he didn't, just tried to pimp other cards without going through E-Bay.

So having not had anybody try and gouge me on shipping in at least a couple of years as I said went ahead and bid, won all 17 for .99 cents each. I then send the Please Combine Shipping e-mail and he sends me an Invoice for the cards $16.83 and then $1.00 for first card and .85 cents for each card, total $14.60 shipping.

So this isn't a debate about shipping charges, I charge $3 to ship 10-50 raw cards. I will not be paying this and he can do you know what with his cards. The reason I am posting is to ask what are my Real Options here?

Thanks

Neil

1.Pay the 14.00 and leave 17 negs all telling a story of what happend with this seller. You could write a college esay with that many feedbacks.
2.Not pay and get a strike on your account.
3.Email him and ask are you sure thats what you think is fair. If so then do #1 as well.
4.Eh bite it and just brush it off as you had a chance to email what his sh fees might be as they were not listed. New lesson to do before buying like this again.

As a buyer - I think if you do not ask about combining shipping ahead of time, you're out of luck if you get an unfavorable arrangement.

As a seller - I never mention combined shipping. If people win more than one item from me (I really don't sell a lot on eBay), I will oblige with a pretty good deal (ie - If $3 S&H for each, I'll combine to $4).

would you be able to pull through this profitably if you paid 31 bucks and change for the cards? if there was no specific reference to combined shipping, then you're kind of at the mercy of the seller, who obviously can't be satisfied with 99 cents a card and cheap shipping.

    he'll wind up making nothing.

make a business decision, you wanted the cards when you bid on them. jmo. image

If you don't want to get dinged, ^this^.

If he won't come off the S/H charges, insist they're mailed separately and leave appropriate feedback.

If he lowers his shipping costs, would you be willing to pay more for the cards because he expected them to sell more than the minimum bid? e.g. change the agreement after the auction ends.

My point is that he is honoring the contract he made by putting these cards up for sale. YOU made the decision to enter into this transaction with his stated shipping costs and did not ask for specifics on combined shipping costs. Now you want to break the contract because he is following the terms he set-up at auction and you did not get further clarification before you bid.

I do agree that it is a crappy business practice and probably why he only received minimum bids.

  • Morning,

    This is his answer:

    Dear thedutymon,

Sorry Can not sale cards for $.99 The cards sell for $3
The shipping of $.85 is my way to recoup part of the difference. If you do
not want the cards you can opt out. You should have asked about shipping
discounts before you made the buys
    Marv

So he is right (About asking) and wrong (About gouging admittingly on shipping), I am pretty sure that this is against E-Bay policy and admitting it in an E-Mail to me is not to bright. That is the risk of listing items at .99 cents, I take it all the time.

Anyway I'm going to ask for mutual end to 17 listings.....I don't deal with douches, and here he is for your BBL:

  • You could pay individually for each auction through Paypal, that way he will get hit with $0.30 on each auction (in addition to the 2.9%).

YOu could also do free pick up service and pay with pennys and drop them on the ground so he has to pick them up.
Eh at least he was up front with what he was doing. And he also gave you an out as well.
    Hope it ends well.

Well, since I dont have a dead horse to beat, I will just give my opinion.

On ebay, most people are there to sell stuff (Duh!) and make a little money. If the buyer stated in the auction that he charges xxx for shipping and xxx for each additional card, then as a buyer, I would expect to pay that and not ask to renegotiate after the fact and you would be 100% in the wrong by giving a neg or not buying them. IF, however, he did not list that as a shipping price, then negotiation would be ok.

Problem I see here is regardless of the seller's method of recouping fees, which, I know we like to all hate on ebay, but then quote their rules when convenient. I see the whole issue as being initiated by the buyer when not asking for details on the shipping beforehand.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • He doesn't want to sell them at that selling price!

You do not want to buy them at that shipping price!

Sounds like a NO brainer to me! Agree to cancel transaction.

You also posted this asking for options, but options do not come on this board without opinions, and I have come to beleive there is some very good advice given on this board. Even though it may not be the best bussiness decission by the seller, he does have the right to set S&H rates. If it is not specified, it is your obligation to find out what they are before bidding. That puts you at fault with this transaction, but you call him a douch?
