It is the biggest image of a coin I think I have ever seen- for those keeping score, I have a smaller monitor now not that anyone should care.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

MacCrimmon: When this image loaded, the left side of my computer screen blew out and took out the west wall of my apartment. My landlord says you owe him $12K. Or this Florin, which I will uh, pass on to him.

    Two questions:

    1) Date: mdcccxlvii: 1847. Am I reading that wrong? I do not see an 1847 Gothic Florin in my Krause. Am I high?
    2) In Krause, KM # 746.1 has a notation "Obv: without die number" and KM 746.2 has a notation "Obv: with die number". Where is this die number located on these coins?
I can not seem to see it. But then again I could be reading the date wrong on this as well.

    And a note:

In the first "I" of the date, doesn't it look like the I may have been triple punched? Lower right part of the I is what I am referring to.

I know all of you Anglophiles have a lot more knowledge about this series than I do, so I am mining for gold here.

Nicholas, the coin listed is a proof Gothic Crown, not florin. 1847 is the correct date, although they were minted for the collectors for several years (can't recall how many).

And when I listed this I assumed it would come in somewhat more compressed, but WHAM!!!!, it did'nt. It's Super Bowl pizza sized............for TWENTY!

edited: another reason for leaving it is that it's an excellent tool when comparing a "questionable" Chinese copy.

Also, another great marker is the raised tooling mark in the "i" of Die on the obverse. I'm sure there are many others, but my dial-up hasn't finished loading yet. image

There are very rare 1846 patterns as well as 1853s.

Mac: I feel foolish. I really do not know much about these coins and tend to confuse the series when looking at a picture without a size scale. I'm definitely a newbie at this since the most experience I have had with British material is with the 1/2d and 1d series.

I see the tooling mark on the I of "Dei". Neat!

    Foolish? Nonsense!

All of the Victoria decimals can be hard to ID when you first look at the obverse, or even reverses alone. I think only wybrit and robp were born knowing all the combos instantly.

    Keep working at it. image

Mac: Thanks, buddy. I appreciate it. I am really just starting to learn the British series now. I just ordered my first copies of Spink and Coincraft. We shall be learning quickly! And bought my first hammered coins (Elizabeth I and James I) for my daughter's (formerly my) British Collection. Super excited to have them in hand shortly!
