question about free subs

for whatever reason i decided to renew my psa membership (i let it lapse about three years ago). anyway, i was wondering how particular they are re: the $500 value limit. for example, i have a couple of fairly nice opc gretzky rookies that i think might grade psa 7. is it okay to submit these? if they do grade near-mint they exceed the $500 limit, but on the other hand they might only fetch ex-mt 6s which makes them below the limit. i don't suppose the grader takes this into consideration when he/she is grading the card, do they?

Yes, you can practically send anything you want, but you can only set a max of $500 as the declared (and insured) value. Therefore, if you have a $2K card that gets lost, you'll only get $500 back, so you need to balance it like that. As far as any grading bias, I don't think you would see it. I've had cards that I have sent in under the $100 special that came back w/ such high grades that I was able to sell them at $500 so you never know. I would think they would only pull it if it were obvious (e.g., 1952 Mantle as a $100 special).
