Can a first day of issue be attached to a catchet that had previously been signed, Grayson passed in 1981 and the fdc is post marked 1984, does that mean the envelope was made in 84??
My guess would be the postcard was stamped in '84. Its not very clear if Grayson was not around in 84 to sign, it would seem some foresight was at work.
Then in 1984 when the Jim Thorpe stamp was issued, they bought a stamp, put it on the Grayson-signed envelope, and had the envelope postmarked on the first day of issue for the stamp.
I've seen this several times. I even have a couple of envelopes where this was done. One is an envelope signed by actress Ginger Rogers, that was later postmarked in Palm Springs CA the day she died. I also have an envelope signed by astronaut Roger Chaffee. He was one of the three Apollo 1 astronauts who died January 27th, 1967 in a capsule fire at Cape Canaveral FL. The envelope was later postmarked July 20th, 1969 at Cape Canaveral in honor of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Guess checking if the person was alive when the item was signed should be a step in the authentication process.
Someone had an envelope signed by Bobby Grayson.
