89 fleer "Rick face"

I was thinking about some cheap/fun boxes to buy when I thought about 89 fleer for Ken Griffey's rookie card, Randy Johnson's rookie error cards as well as Bill Ripken's rookie error cards. I know that Fleer has about 5 corrected versions of Ripken's card as well as Randy's Marlboro error, so if I bought a box which corrected version would I most likely get?

If it was me buying the boix, it would be the most common cards. Anyone else it would be the rare variations.

Seriously, I would expect the more common issues from any box purchased.

  • Ive opened up plenty of those boxes and theres no way of telling if the wax box you open will have them unless the seller knows (and if he purchased a case, he should know). If you open up a wax box from a case and it has a Bill Ripken FF face error card, then all will have them. If its the black box varaiation, then the case will have nothing but those instead.

A local dealer I know sells the boxes with the FF error for $15 but I doubt he would ship out just 1 wax box out. Wouldnt be worth his time I'm sure. Best bet is to go on ebay I guess. Goodluck.

Wow, I remember the frenzy when this happened. When it was discovered, Fleer supposedly stopped the presses and corrected. At that point, everyone assumed the FF on the bat would be super rare and one of the great rarities and collectibles of all time. I remember packs going for 5 bucks and the card istelf upwards of 100.

Turns out Fleer caught it much later than everyone thought and there are millions of FF cards out there, and it's not worth much at all. I remember there are 3-4 variations, isn't one in particular super rare? Like a scribble or something...

I remember selling a couple of them for 150 each. I had a night job at a local convienence store at the time and we actually carried those boxes. I bought them before they were put away.
  • I think the white scribble-over was the rare one.
  • I happened to get a handful of 89 fleer packs earlier this year that I opened and got a F-Face card. I think besides the black box version, the F-Face is the second most common version.

I remember waiting in the card shop for a new shipment of cello boxes to arrive. I think I paid $100 for the box. They were selling like hot cakes. Dealers had to start hiding the packs because people who knew the sequences were pulling all the packs that had the Ripken whenever they opened a new box. I wish I would have bought a high grade vintage card instead. image

I was ten years old when this card came out. I remember going to card shows with either my dad or a friend's dad and sneaking peaks at the FF card.

I recently bought one for 5 bucks at a card show, and thinking it was an 8 or 9, I sent it in to get graded and it came back as a 6. For not much more I probably could've found a 9. Oh well.
  • Forgot I had these until I saw this thread. Picked them up several years ago. After doing a completed auction search on E-bay I am now contemplating getting them graded. Any thoughts/advice? Not sure if the whiteout is the rare on?. Have a couple of the scribble variations. Thanks.

  • I have been collecting some unopened material throughout 80's and was eyeing some cases of 89 Fleer. This seller, did have a 50% off sale with a best buy offer at $500 last week. I was turned down at $180 as I dont think they are worth much more than that, while his current asking price of $1000. I think thats an insane price, personally. But in his description he states they are 100% guaranteed of the Bill Ripken error (incidentally, the card says BILL, while everyone refers to him as BILLY - why is that?). Needless to say, how certain can one be of the Ripken error or the other errors that he is claiming to be in the packs? (I also doubt his claim of "first time ever offered on eBay".

Anybody that buys that case is getting ricked in the auction house.

I think he was more commonly known as Billy. Topps, Donruss, and UD all called him Billy on his 1989 cards.
