Colonial Price Guide now live!

Colonial Price Guide now live!

Price Guide menu page

Scroll down Price Guide menu page, then click in Colonial section to check it out.

This is the first pass, so don't laugh too hard.

We did a lot of work. Ron Guth spent a lot of time and we had a good deal of help from Colonial expert extraordinaire John Agre.

Still have a lot of work and price adjustments to do. Don't have French Colonies up yet...we're working on it.

These are great coins. Enjoy!

Excellent! Thank you, kind sir! According to the guide I did UTTERLY SCREAMINGLY well on the 1787 Mass cent I purchased just over a couple two years ago, and in reality, in a hypothetical sale scenario, would still anticipate to make out very well.

On the flip side, it just reaffirms the near-hoplessness I have in procuring a nice, graded example of Mass silver, so thanks for that one (no sarcasm emoticon...lol)!!

Overall, I think it's a nice addition. Take prices tongue-in-cheek, as with all series, but good job (and overdue, IMHO), nonetheless, HRH and PCGS!

    edited for spelling
    I'll come up with something.

Thanks! I think one thing to consider, especially with the copper coinage, is that there can be a huge variation in planchet quality and color for market acceptable coins -- moreso than early federal copper. This will make it difficult to pin down a price point for a specific grade, which is something to consider both when buying and selling.

The best feature is that coins are only priced in grades where they actually exist. If an outlier in far better condition than the rest of the pack...it is preceded by blank spaces in the intervening grades. Very good too is this in envisioning the makeup of the population.....image..it comical to wander over ATS and look at their Spocklike logical mathematical progression of fantasy values on their pRiCe gUiDe and see precise values for a Typical Gobscheit Vermont Copper carried out to MS70...yeah Right

I'm sure the board will come up with many good suggestions on how to improve this resource, but I will share a couple thoughts.

I would consider changing the name to Colonial - Early Federal Price Guide. Everyone knows the series as Colonial, but that's because it's easier, not because it's accurate.

At the present, the Libertas Americana medal is placed under the Washington Pieces. It really doesn't fit there, but it is important, and assuming it needs to fit into the current categories, I guess Washington Pieces is as good as any.

That said, I would probably suggest a category for early medals. In it, I would place items such as Comitia Americana medals and items like the Washington Funeral Medals. Most of these are covered inside CoinFacts, so it wouldn't take a ton of additional work. At very least, if you're going to include the Libertas American medal under Washington medals, I would also include the Washington Before Boston medal as well.

These are difficult to grade ....there is no definitive authority on grading these I know of....I wonder what the grading services use?

PCGS just might have lulled someone going through mid life crisis to start collecting Colonial coins. (not like I'm referring to any of our illustrious posters on board) image

Maybe next, Colonial copies. The legitimate ones, such as from Dickeson, Idler, etc. Not the modern junk.

In the case of Mercury Dimes, that is the "given name" or nickname for a particular series. In the Colonial usage, it is a term used to described items that originated during a certain a period of time. The reason for its popular usage is undoubtedly because it's easier to say than Colonial / Early Federal. However, as a descriptor of a series, it remains inaccurate.

At any rate, if the the Mercury Dime parallel was an attempt to argue that one inaccuracy allows for another, I will disagree.

I don't think so - unless PCGS decides to start grading them.

This will be a great resource for many people to take a look at with regards to colonial pricing. I will say that colonials are really hard to make a price guide for as pieces with choice color and surfaces can be multiples in price compared to coins with the same detail but not as choice.

With that said, I think this will be a fantastic resource going forward and kudos to PCGS for going ahead with this for everyone to see!
