Advice needed - weird request after the sale.

This person was the winning bidder in one of my auctions. Promptly paid, but then sent me this message. I have no clue how to ever respond to this....how would you handle it?

I just now found that I have this card in my inventory in better grade, and did not know I had the card when bidding. I would like to
ask if any of your Jim Brown listings could be purchased in trade,r
if you have other like cards in your inventory that I could substitute
for this purchase. I feel silly and disorganized admitting the oversight, but hoe we can find an agreeable substitute. Thanks for
your consideration.

Any advicce?

I'd try to work a deal with him and hope he becomes a return bidder (or maybe use him to shill you listings image ). image

You gonna get scammed if you send something different.

What is the dollar amount we are talking about here and is the buyer an established eBayer?

My guess is they get you to send something else, then claim SNAD through PayPal which would be legit at that point then they send you back an empty box or something assine.

Offer to complete the transaction or refund the money.

Sounds like a dangerous buyer to deal with.

$35 card and the buyer has over 2,000 feedbacks.

The safest bet is to agree to mutually cancel the transaction, get your FV fees returned and either offer the bidder an option to buy something else or block him. There are three things that can happen, otherwise . . . and two of them are bad...

Respond with overwhelming kindness and positive tone and let him know there's no need to bother with a substitute if he doesn't want the card. Go through Ebay's cancel sale option and refund his money in full and try to get back the fees. When the dust settles, put him on your BBL if he shows even the slightest hint of being a scammer.

If he wants to pull a scam, he could just claim that he received a 1988 Topps checklist, no matter what card he actually received.

Politely tell him you want to keep it simple. Cancel the sale and see what happens.

Sounds like he could have just made an honest mistake, or he could be a scammer of some kind.

  • Thank him, mutually cancel the sale and let him know what else you may have.
  • i find it hard to believe he would scam you for $35. i wouldn't bother scamming anyone for for less than $300 image

At $35 and with 2k feedback, I'd send him a substitute card and wouldn't even worry about it. If you are worried, just tell him you will just cancel the transaction.
  • If you have another card that your willing to sell for the same price and he would like that one instead, then I don't see any issue here. Especially for $35.

Ask him what hes interested in and if he wants something of higher value, then just add $35 on to his credit and let him pay up the rest before releasing any card to him.

I was hoping for a weirder request than that, like maybe he wanted you to sing after he sale, like they do at Coldstone Creamery.
  • It sounds like that's a buyer that made an honest mistake. I'd try to work with him too.

I would have been willing to accommodate his request until he called you a ho. No need for that.

Seriously though, I would have him pull the trigger on something else before you cancel the first sale.

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Wouldn't he need to show his belly button first?
