Question for any Washington Quarter variety experts

seanqseanq Posts: 8,836 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm wondering what the relative rarity / value is for the following three major varieties on 1942 quarters (I don't have the FS numbers handy)

- Philadelphia Doubled Die Reverse
- Denver Doubled Die Obverse
- Denver Doubled Die Reverse

One of my goals this year was to cherrypick one of each off eBay, a goal I'm 2/3 of the way to fulfilling. I've been trying to get a feel for the market on them in lower circulated grades, but there are so few sales to be found (mainly on Heritage and Teletrade). Is there a market for these coins raw, or am I better off trying to get them attributed and holdered?

Denver DDO (FS-101) is worth the most, as it has the widest spread (i.e., the doubling is easier to see) Also, an Obv. DD is usually worth slightly more than a Rev. DD (all other things being equal).

IMO the Philly DDR (FS-801) is the next most valuable, because it is has clearer doubling than the Denver DDR (FS-801).

I have all 3 in my personal collection, otherwise I would contact you and offer on them.

Looks like a P FS803 would be worth sending in as they have only graded one so far.

Never mind it's not in the registry set. Looking there it looks like the 42-D DDO #95818 is the only one that has a slot making the extra fees market acceptable probably in the lower grades your looking for.
