Worn coin ID help

Found this coin in a bag of dimes. It is really worn but the outline of the portrait looks fairly distinctive. I can see I think 1937 to the upper left near the rim. Google has been no help.

  • You might try South Africa , it looks familiar and similar profile to a shilling i had from there.
  • i agree south africa is a definite possibility but not completely sure. It is really an unusual find!
  • My guess is Belgium. Small South African coins of the late 1800's do not have a legend on the obverse.

  • Good shout Chris , what was throwing me is what the OP thought was a date , it isnt a date , its part of the letters ROI
  • I don't know the denomination of your coin without the weight but it would have looked something like this one , well called guys with Belgium.

The beard isn't right for Belgium. Is it the size of a dime and is it silver (since you found it in a bag of dimes)? Those narrow pointed beards are usually Italy or Italian States mid-19th century, but possibly France or German States about the same time period.

Thanks for all the help. The coin is the diameter of a U.S. Dime and weighs 2.03g.

Still looks like the Belgium 50¢ 1907-1909 to me.

Theres a trace of something on the reverse , could be CENTS , whats left of it. I think its Belgium too , the OP will be able to determine if that's the remnants of ROI on the obverse.

I'd go with Belgium. It looks like Leopold to me.

I'm leaning towards the Belgium 50 Centimes. On the reverse of my coin you can make out the outline of a shield/crest. On the right side I can make out a little flourish so I'm wondering if it could be this reverse design

My vote is Belgium, have to page back a bit, but the beard changes as he ages kind of neat seeing all the variets lined up with enough detail to see the subtul changes as he ages. Thats the only reason i threw together a type set these.
