The Champion Game of Baseball - Piedmont Chair

The Champion Game of Base Ball - Proctor Amusement Co., No. Cambridge, Mass. - c1915

This is a tough one to know what the date is? I've seen dates attributed to the game anywhere from 1888 to 1915.

Some games do have patents that provide a production range - while others have the copyright - and can run (be made) for 20 or more years. I remember dating one game by the fact that - though it was patented in 1928, the game I picked up - not only was pristine but the envelope with parts was scotch taped closed instead of stapled. Now, scotch tape was invented in 1930 - so we know the game wasn't one from 1928.

In this case, I would date it by virtue of the instructions which references - e.g. - a game between the Philadelphia A's and the Boston Braves - 1914 WS.

I apologize for the digression.

What do I like? This one looks like it was never used! The "men" are still sealed in the original envelope.

This game was made very cheaply - which kind of surprises me since many games of this period were made very well - thick stock - wood - some metal etc.

To start with the cover - I've seen it in all forms of disrepair - and this one is a beauty!

The fact that the graphics were taped on and coming loose doesn't detract for me - it's part of the cheap way it was made.

The mechanism is a simple spinner and to be honest - would not last with a bunch of kids hitting that thing all day long on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

I did a cursory check of the outcomes and think that - I would guess - that 50% of the area of the spinner is an OUT - so my guess? We're not going to see FB type scores?

Didn't find anything on the company and paid too much for the game - but this is the first one I've seen that wasn't in poor to fair condition - so along with a Danny MacFayden game - this is one of the "centerpiece" games in my collection.

And now to the seat - I'm sure many of you have seen it. This one was for sale along with another in lesser condition - didn't sell - put this one up - didn't sell - dropped the price to 225 and 25 shipping and based on previous sales - thought it was fair.

Piedmont Tobacco Chair

I've read on some auctions that these folding chairs may have been used at ballparks? Some auctions have it dated around 1910s to 20s? I have no idea. But what I do like is the cobalt blue enamel on metal advertising sign embedded in the seat back. I'm sure T206 collectors have one in their collection - but for me it's just a way too cool collectible.

The stenciling is weak but readable - overall, the chair is in great shape IMO.

On the "coupons" - back around 1910 or so - one can "redeem" the coupons for some neat stuff:

Hiya Sonny. Both were picked up on ebay. I usually spend about an hour a day looking for items. But - to be honest - I'm outa money/budget!

    Thanx Steve!

You beat me to it. They went with that old guy to his "cabin" in the rear of the yard (a full MAN CABIN instead of a MAN CAVE) where a chair like that was sitting in awesome condition, along with many other items.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
