64 topps giants

How come these cards are somewhat inexpensive compared to regular sized sets? Example; a 64 topps giants Mickey Mantle Psa 8 sells around $80 to $100, whereas the regular sized set that year would sell for significantly more. Was there a lot produced making them less desirable?

A number of years ago there was a warehouse "find" of these cards that has made them fairly plentiful. Their size also is a detriment to their value as there is less demand for these oversize cards. I happen to love them and would love to put a set together one of these days.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

Another reason would be that kids were not able to open these packs and put the cards in their pocket. Nor did they use these to flip and play other games. In other words, they probably did not got thru the grind that the regular sized cards did and thus did not get worn as much.

I sold my set a couple years ago. None were high grade. I think I got about $200 for it. I was very happy with the sale. They are just not appealing to me. However, I do remember back in the 70's there was a toy store in LA (Brentwood) that would put one or two on the outside of boxes they gift wrapped for boys. Of course they all had tape on them so no value.

was it the toy store on Westwood Blvd, around Olympic? Not actually Brentwood, but they used to do stuff like that.

Until at least the last '70's you could buy them at Dodger Stadium, 20 for .25
They were overprinted and fairly common, and still are in mint or near mint shape. Plus the centering is rarely an issue with them, don't think I've ever seen one off center or miscut.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Funny they may have done it at that store on Westwood too but my recollection was the toy store up in Brentwood right near Brentwood School.

    Star Toys?
  • I just finished my set. Interestingly, my last purchase was a lot of 20 cards that came in a white envelope with blue lettering that says:

    Collectors Special
    old time baseball cards
    Set of 20
    Only .25

Luckily, the eBay seller probably didn't know much about these cards as I got all the short prints, Clemente, Aaron, ford and commons for a very nice price. Even better, these cards colors are bright, white backs and very sharp corners. Probably nm-mt to mint.

I'd love to post a picture of the envelope, just don't know how to do it.

I really like this set, I encourage anyone to complete it.

Lee- you got a package that was sold at Dodger Stadium. There was no such thing as short prints, they were all just as common as each other.

LA- I'm thinking it was the store on the south side of San Vicente, across from Vicente foods and east of Brentwood School a bit?

  • Griffins,

I've read that seven cards were short printed: mays, Koufax, causey, Cisco, Stuart, friend and skowron. I may be wrong, if someone knows, please let us know.

I've always read that too, but in the ones I bought from Dodger Stadium by the brick load the sp's weren't any tougher to come by than the rest of the set.

  • griffiths, i bought a case of these in the mid 70's from a fellow in california, merv williams. the cards mentioned previously were in short supply in my case. when i went to a few shows back then, dealers would be selling short sets missing these cards. mantle was by far the most abundant card in my case.

Footlong, Merv lived a few blocks from me and used to drive me to the monthly card shows in Garden Grove from '73-'75. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
He used to get deals on certain vending lots, '64 giants and '59 Topps especially.
However, the cards from Dodger Stadium must've been from another press run, because there were tons of Koufax's. Being in LA that was the card we were looking for, not Mantle (which was also there in abundance), and I remember there being no shortage of Mays either. Maybe they had the short printed sheet.
Either way, I don't think the short prints in this set are nearly as scarce as the short prints in a lot of other sets.
