If I had a ton of money I would buy the best known example of this and put it away for a long time.
I saw one of these sell a few weeks ago for a nice price and there are a number on the completed listings page. >>
I agree would love to own this and put it away and bring it out in like 20 years. Imagine how much it will be worth when Hefner passes away? Hate saying that, but the value would only increase over time regardless of the economy. There will always be a whale or several who wants an item like this.
Wouldn't you think the value can only go down? I would think a significant part of the value comes from older men that were fans of Marilyn. Eventually the people that are old enough to remember her when she was alive will pass on. No different than the thought of vintage cards losing value as the people who collected them as a child pass on.

Your so right, no one these days under the age of 30 cares about dead and gone players like Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle or Ty Cobb. Ill even go as far as saying in 100 years people will be saying "whos Jackie Robinson". Get real man, Monroe was the worlds first true sex icon and will always be rememberd.
Also to point out that Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was here and gone long before any of us were ever thought of. That being said, how many millions, upon millions of dollars are spent each year on his works of art. Not to mention all the people who painstakingly restore his masterpieces to preserve them for future generations. But your right no one will care about this stupid magazine in 50 years.
I collect vintage magazines and I would say that's it over graded at 7.5. It's a 6 in my opinion. I see wear on every corner front and back. From the photo, it's difficult to see the covers' surface to see any surface indents from paging through it. It appears to have some small wrinkles by the binding area. It's off white too. I would expect something graded 7.5 be it a card or magazine to appear 'fresher' looking. But maybe I'm too picky.
I've found most sellers on ebay cannot grade magazines properly or simply don't know how to. Looks like CGC is in the same boat.

I like what you are saying but Monroe was def. not the first true sex icon, Clara Bow, Mae West, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth (first poster in Shawshank redemption), etc...

Really? Comparing a talentless alcoholic drug addict that had an affinity for married men to one of, if not the best baseball player of all time? No comparison. If it weren't for Monroe being idolized by young women through social media, how many girls under the age of 25 would even know who she is?

You sound like the kind of guy who would complain if you scored a pair of MM's knickers and found a stain.
<< <i>Who is the leading grader of magazines? And is there a web site that shows prices and populations? >>
CGC is the PSA in the comic books and magazines world. I'm pretty sure there is a site that has prices and population, although I do not know what it is.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.
Who cares about Monroe, I think the 1st edition Playboy is the Gold mine. The brand is huge, continues to grow, and I can only see this item going up over time. I want it, but.... I dunno. Just not sure I want to start down the magazine comic road yet.

Babe Ruth was no paragon of virtue. Marilyn was quite talented despite her problems. Try actually LEARNING about people before making such harsh comments about them. Nobody's perfect.

I would actually worry about the brand getting diluted. And people in 20 years are going to go....playboy what? Esp when Heffner is gone.
-The problem is playboy had pretty much a monopoly on the adult "gentlemans" magazine/brand from the 50's to the 80's. Like Rolex was to watches. But then that market got very fragmented with the internet, other mens magazines like Maxim and the decline of magazines and print in general.
It's certainly iconic. Maybe the brand is much stronger than I think. How strong will it be after Hefner? Isn't he like, 75?

The big thing IMO is its a first edition Playboy. That brand isn't going anywhere. I bet this goes for big money.
