I had some unopened 85-87 fleer/topps/mixed baseball card packs -

Back in the summer when I was moving, I found them in a box stashed away - I asked at the time what to do - sell them unopened, or have a look-see at them. The general (actually overwhelming) opinion was to open them up & see what I had.
Well, not too much, but there are several interesting cards that may be of value. I will list those that I think would be worth something......opinions welcome on whether or not o submit them.

Young guys -
Billy Beane rookie card (Fleer #535) - he looks like a young Brad Pitt! image
Barry Larkin rookie card (Fleer #204)
Mark McGuire - 'rookie record setter' (Fleer #629)*
Ken Caminiti - rookie card (Fleer #441)*
Gregg Jefferies rookie card (Fleer #137) - sure wish he had lived up to the billing!

Now some of the old dude cards -
Orel Hershiser (Fleer #518) - 5 years w/ L.A.
Bo Jackson! (Fleer #260) - after 1st full year w/K.C. - Bo, we hardly knew ya - should have stuck to baseball.
Carlton Fisk (Fleer #397 - had 17 years in the bigs when the card was printed
Dennis Eckersley (topps #72) - after 1st year w/A's as closer
Rollie Fingers (topps #761) - 1st year w/Brewers
Vida Blue (Donruss #362) - after 4 full seasons
The "O's" Brothers - Bill & Cal Ripken (Fleer #640) - 'super star special'
Donnie Baseball - (Fleer #104) - after 4 seasons w/Yanks

Jose Canseco - (Fleer #389) - after 1st full season with As*
Jose Canseco - (Fleer card #2 of 6) - Fleer Headliners* - how did they know ahead of time?

* I figured these guys all deserve asterisks, so I put them there.image

Any approximate values (if at all) would be appreciated - all cards are in mint condition.

It was fun!

Mark McGwire is a young guy, but Bo Jackson is an old dude? They were born a year apart. image
  • they are worth more unopened or in a slab that says PSA 10.
  • MLBfan - Yeah, my bad on listing Bo as an old dude...it just wasn't a rookie card. Of all the 'what ifs?' in sports, he has to rank in the top 5.

So, of all the cards listed are there any worth submitting in hopes of the 'PSA10' slab? I would have to enroll as a submitter or piggyback with another submission, and from what I was reading, it looks none too cheap to get cards graded these days. Maybe I should just keep them for my 2 year old grandson, and tell him all about the good ol' days.

I didn't even know that Billy Beane made it to the bigs - is that in the movie?

    Thanks for any guidance!

  • Thanks for reaffirming my initial thoughts....does anybody think that baseball cards will ever become what they were 30-40 years ago? I think I was working at a drug store just about the time the bubble was about to burst. We were getting in boxes of Donruss & Upper Deck cards, and guys would be waiting for me to unload the truck so that they could buy the entire cases. It seems that those 2 companies were the death knell of what was a good thing till then?
