Cards in the attic.

My search function does not seem to work so I cannot find the original thread I made a couple of years ago.
Anyways...I have added a couple of newbies to this "raw 50s" project and took all new pics too. I believe I have every HOFer from that era with the exception of the 1959 Bob Gibson and the 1953 Satchell Paige, so it is still a work in progress.
I enjoy pulling this box out now and again to go through them. It is really all I have left for a card collection. I did the expensive registry sets, hi-grade singles, low-pop common thing and I never was completely satisfied with it. This box of cards really has curbed my appetite for the hobby. I guess it is because I have finally found something that is fulfilling to me.

I give you guys...a "hobby box".

    Bob, absolutely awesome image

No worries about anything except pure enjoyment there!
  • Boom! Love it.
  • Great the hobby as it should be. Raw and you can actually touch your cards. Congrat's.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. This project was a blast to do!
I have mostly you guys to thank for this since a majority of the cards were purchased from board members.

I still have a little bit of room in there on the sides of each row. I have to get my Gibson and Paige. I still want to get either the 52 Mays or 52 Jackie Robinson. A few others I want eventually are the 1955 Kaline, Matthews, and Aaron.

    Some newbies for the box.

Since I had it out to put my new 56s away, I thought I would check out my box over my morning coffee. Not a very productive day off. image

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Love em man. Every single raw one of them. Thanks for sharing.
  • Beautiful cards and pictures, nothing better then a nice colorful presentation of raw cardboard at its best. Your setup is very well done. Thanks again

This is an excellent project. It's pretty much a higher level version of what I did from '91 until I lapsed into inactivity in '94.

I was collecting generally more midgrade cards, usually more from the '62 to '70 era, but I was putting them in toploaders and in those two row boxes. It was lots of fun and I still have everything I did then.

Thanks for the kind word fellas.
I thought about doing a 60s Topps box, but decided against it. However, a Bowman box wouldn't be out of the question.

Just think how great that box will be once you get rid of all the Boston cards. image

I think this was Bob's original thread

    Edited to add the thread.
  • Bob, let me know when you are done remodeling your bathroom. I have a nice raw, mid grade 1955 Aaron that is calling your name.
  • Downtown1974Downtown1974 Posts: 6,975 ✭✭✭✭✭

Added a few into the mix over the last few months. I only need a 53 Satchel Paige to have every HOFer from that era represented here.
I need to learn how to resize my pictures.

You motivated me a few years back to start collecting mid-grade HOFer's. I've been slowly picking up cards off ebay. My strategy is to pick up mid-grade, well centered cards in non PSA holders. Seems like the best bargain to me and I don't feel bad busting them out of other TPG cases to present raw. Might cost me a few bucks if I ever resell, but I so enjoy holding the cards raw!

One of my favorite threads. Always enjoy looking at your collection!!!!
  • This is exactly(well not exactly) what I did. I was buying a bunch of Slabs and kept thinking "this isn't very tangible for me" < I can't touch or smell the cards...

Sure slabs are great for resale value, but they are hard to display, if I got a custom made display case I wouldn't feel right posting thousands of dollars on the wall. I was stuck!

So I thought what the heck, sell the slabs and build a binder of mid grade HOFers from all those vintage years.

I have kept a few slabs near and dear but I'm much happier with my binder... although binders aren't the safest place to store your cards I know.

my collection is definitely a step down from yours Downtown1974... that is AWESOME.

A few recent additions. Also took them all out of top loaders and put them in Card Saver I's. Made room for about 200 more cards by doing that.

    Bob, congrats on the additions!!!

That must have taken quite a bit of time to swap out the top loaders for card savers, but I'm sure you enjoyed handling the cards as you went along.

HaHa....it sucked bad, Mike. I ripped all of the skin around my thumbnails off. image

It was cool holding them. Luckily I didn't bleed on any of them.
  • I searched for this thread but couldn't find it. I love this idea. I just started collecting PSA vintage Maravich cards and after looking on the forum for awhile I got the itch to put some sets together. After looking at prices for PSA 8+ vintage cards I decided to throw out that idea because of the expense. I'm inspired by your collection and look forward to picking up some raw basketball Rookies, HOF's, and stars. I've got to the point where I look at the grade first and the card second. I guess it's because I'm a lot harder judge on a card in a slab verses a top loader or card saver.

BTW, how are you liking the card savers and do you put them in a penny sleeve first?
  • wow wow and wow. i dont even have that many REPRINTS. image

Mires, thanks for your kind words.
The card savers are working out fine. I like them. I do not use penny sleeves with them.

Good luck on your NBA quest. Please post some pics so we can see the progress you are making. I love 1970s Basketball cards!
    Take care,

That's a terrific collection of great old cards, Downtown1974! image Congrats!

Are any Mantles other than his '56 & '58 among them?
  • Downtown1974Downtown1974 Posts: 6,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
Original...no, thats all I have for Mickeys. The 56 is VG to VG/EX. The 58 is a beauty. Solid EX/MT card.

If it's an either/or, I'd vote for the '52 Robinson. Such a classic card and color, I'd like to get one eventually too! image

    Hello,

Just think, you turned back the clock and are collecting the way the boys did back then in the 50s
I can remember collecting that way in the late sixties and early seventies.

    Congratulations on your collection.

Picked up a couple more HOFers and the 56s are from Brian (captainthreeputt).
Brian gave me a tremendous deal on them. Also threw in 25 freebies!
