IS LAURA RUNNING? ARE YOU VOTING FOR HER?
It's that time again. Time to NOMINATE people to run for a seat on the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors for a two year term begining next August. We have heard that Laura Sperber is planning on running in this cycle. She needs a number of members and/or ANA clubs to NOMINATE her in order to get on the ballot. Nominations must be in by March 31st. If you plan to VOTE for her you must be a paid member as of March 31st of 2012. Voting will take place in late June and early July. It would be lots of fun to see Laura on the ANA board. She just might shake things up a bit. What do YOU think?

I've seen too much drama and controversy at the ANA over the last several years and it wasn't "lots of fun" so I doubt I'll be voting for Laura. I've been an ANA member since 1980.

If Laura provides the buttons, I would wear one.

Sperber would probably make some waves but nothing will change much.
It will remain the same old stodgy organization it's been for such a long time.

Even when I consider all the good she might do working with the rest of the ANA Board, I think the hobby would benefit even more if she continued as she has. Offering unfettered moral suasion seems a more effective leveraging of her talents
Her stand against the coin molesters is sufficient reason for me.

I won't touch that one with a 10" banana
More effective and more entertaining!

Is their most important function combating the coin doctors? If so, you got your answer.
Understand the organization is currently investing a lot of energy in other stuff like running conventions, their museum, educational programs, library, publications, summer seminar, etc.
If you disagree w/where they are at, then you can vote to "reprioritize."

Is the CRO hat about to father a new je ne sais quoi of political couture or are we simply going to be dealing with a bourse floor full of wannabees?
In part because she gave me a very generous contribution for ANA's Florence Schook School of Education last year. The work it does in educating students in the knowledge of the benefits and pitfalls in our hobby, including the various aspects of the minting process as it's evolved into current practice, medal design, modeling and production (another Laura), counterfeit detection, VAMs, photography, problem coins, doctoring tricks and their effects, as well as US coin grading (3 levels), coinage of Latin America and so many other highly focused niche areas ... currency ... aaaaah ... read the course catalogue at money.org (typical CJ run-on sentence)...
What I mean to say is that she knows she doesn't have to go in and clean up the entire place.

Hi OnlyGoldIsMoney,
If you are a paid member as of March 31st, 2012, the audit firm in charge of the election will send you an official ballot as well as a list and platform of all the candidates in June, 2013. You then have about a month to complete the ballot and return it to the audit firm. Sometime in the future the ANA hopes to do this process online. But as far as I know right now, it will continue via mail for at least this election cycle.

You have to decide what the priorities of the ANA should be. Then vote accordingly.

The obvious next M-word to come to mind (especially considering the crowd) need not even be given voice once it has been hinted at.
Without going into it all that deeply, simply for the euphonious delight of something "falling trippingly from the tongue", may I suggest the process of maceration. It's done sometimes with currency. Something sorta like what the Sopranos did in the pork shop to an offender once he had been sufficiently chastised.
Dunno
Are you voting for her?
Yes
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
<< <i>The talk about mastication seems to come from some with dogs as avatars. The last time I saw Aki he looked well-fed. Maybe chew toys are in order.

My doggies aren't into mastication. Food goes straight down. Maceration is by those with no teeth. Laura has teeth.

I looked at the Coin Hound and thought of where that cute little schnozz has been
<< <i>Not trying to create drama...but didn't she have some type of position or was on a committee when folks were coming up with the definition of doctoring...and she QUIT, right? Please correct me if I am wrong. She is passionate but if you can't hang tough when you disagree with folks... something to think about. >>
I remember this episode which is why I said what I said in my prior post here. If she doesn't get her way, will she quit?

I don't know.
> ARE YOU VOTING FOR HER?
No.
I do think some positive things are happening at the ANA currently, with Jeff Shevlin in charge.
I wouldn't want to see things get disrupted.
The job of reducing "coin doctoring" should lie with the grading companies - that is what they are paid to do, after all.
The job of the ANA should be focused almost entirely on boosting general interest in collecting coins.
Somehow I don't think Ms. Sperber would relate well to new low-budget coin collectors,
who dabble in things deridingly called "dreck" and "widgets" by some numismatic "elites".

Although I have really grown to like Laura a lot, I can't disagree with this.
