Real or fake ? 1907 piastre french indochina

Last week I posted a chinese fatman dollar that I had and it was quickly decided by many that it was fake . I have one other coin I have doubts about.

This 1907-a piastre from french indochina . It can from an antique shop just like the phony fatman dollar but not the same place. This one weighs 26.9 grams and is the correct size but something about it bothers me.

It is the only one of these I have ever owned. Its only .1 gram underweight, its non magnetic and it has a proper ring to it

I'll hold back what bothers me about it till later to see if anyone else sees a problem in the same area without me prejudicing it.

Is it magnetic, and how close is wieght. I have a fake one of these that is magnetic and weight is way off. I can put some pics up if you like.

    Edit to add..

Ignore me, Ill hide in the corner and cry.

Ok now that I read the OP, whats the reeding look like. Mine has very weak impressions that are slightly deeper to one side.
  • Looks good to me. I have the 1906 date in slightly better condition and I don't see any difference between ours and the picture in Krause. What is it that is bothering you?

the face of liberty is maybe a little blurry maybe its wear or a mushy strike.

The letters in the word piastre seem to be not on the same line I was trying to compare the other lettering to some french 5 francs but they cram more words in on this so maybe the letters are just closer togetherimage

The reeding is very strong its coarser than what you see on a morgan dollar.
  • All the details are there, just the color is off. If you have a cleaning agent, apply a very tiny bit on the edge to see if it'll change to silver color.
  • looks ok to me

Assuming it weighs out, you should be ok. I've been seeing a fair number of this type in melt boxes over the last 2 years. Once you get up past XF or certain key dates, they can be worth flipping at a premium, but otherwise they're melt...

The flat grey color is a bit odd . Wwhen I got it it was stapled in a old 2x2. I have some other coins I was going to acetone , i'll toss it in with them. If it doesn't respond I have ez-est as a last resort

Yeah, make sure you update us on the result 'cause I have a few counterfeits, though not as details as yours, but they have similar color.

I'm under the impression those are massively counterfeited. I dont dig the color for that reason.
  • The weight is close enough considering both the wear, and the difficulty of measuring perfectly without a scientifically calibrated scale, which I assume you don't have.

I like the denticles too, so unless there is something funny about the reeding, I'd be fairly confident that this one isn't a companion of your fat man.
