What does it mean when the USPS tracking reads "missent"

pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
I mailed a coin out this week. It shows leaving my PO and the next thing it says is missent.

I have never seen that one before.

It means that it has been sent to the wrong place.

Been more than a few years, but last time I saw it, they had misrouted it and that is how they tracked the fact...and it was being "resent" by them to the right place/route.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've had that happen and it means it was routed to the wrong postal facility and it's being "corrected". Donf panic. Ask your postmaster to make a few person to person calls if possible.

I wouldn't worry. They KNOW that they did something wrong, and the package is still in their system after they figured it out. I bet you'll see it get on track in the next few days, maybe after a sidetrip to somewhere that makes no sense.

The real worry is when it disappears from their system with no updates at all. Or of course, when they say it's been delivered and the person on the other end hasn't seen it.

That's a typo. It's supposed to be "misspent". You coin was used in a USPS vending machine inappropriately.

Thank you everyone for your help. That is what I thought it was but had never seen it before.

    Sorry. Just a little levity.

I am very confident there will be no problem with delivery. The postal service saw a problem and made note. Much better than a status that says nothing.

missent usually means it showed up at the wrong post office. This has happened to me recently and it sat in a distribution center for about three weeks before it moved again. I had to call the post office a few times before they looked into it for me. Good luck, you might need it.

Typically the reason it's missent is because the zip code on the label does not match up with the city or something like that.

Edited w/ info (the zip code is at the delivery address) :

Expected Delivery Date: October 17, 2012
    Class: Priority Mail®
    Service(s): Signature Confirmation?
    Status: Missent

Your item was misrouted. The error has been corrected and every effort is being made to deliver it as soon as possible. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.

    Detailed Results:

It means it sent to the wrong place and it will resend again. It will get there. It just takes little more time. It happened to me before.
  • I recently sent a package to the left coast.
Status showed mis-sent somewhere in Utah, took a few days more for the package to be sent to a new sort facility then another couple of days to get where it was supposed to go.

I had that happen to me about a month ago.

I bought a item on ebay from an east-coast dealer. I live in San Antonio TX, and the tracking info said it had made it to San Antonio, but was then "missent" to Brownsville TX (about 280 miles south of San Antonio). It ended up coming back to San Antonio and was delivered to me 2 days later than it would've been had it not been diverted to Brownsville.

Sounds like missing misspelled!image Or maybe the recipient thinks it's a missed cent and if the USPS bloodhounds can't find it a missed scent!

Means the item was misrouted but the USPS is aware of the mistake. It's a lot better than no information.

I, also, had it happen to me, as a shipper. Seems when they KNOW they messed up, and they can locate the package, they are on top of it and it will get delivered. Mine was missent in Brooklyn, NY (of all places, NYC), but the carrier, thankfully, noticed it was 'far from home', brought it back to the facility, scanned it, I got the missent thing, and within 2 days, the P.O. moved it along, and the recipient had the package in hand.

What's it coming to? These P.O. people have jobs where, in order to lose their jobs they'd just about have to murder someone (or, steal from their employer). If they keep a clean nose, they can finish a route in 6 hours and 'hide out' (everyone's seen it around 4pm), benefits are great, pay is very decent...worst thing you have to do is walk a few blocks and maybe get a few signatures. Inside, how difficult is it to sort a package correctly, and route it properly? I'll bet when they opened Tom's package and saw 'just a few modern looking' Washingtons, those were spent right quick. Speaking of which, Tom, did you (or has anyone local to the area) contact/contacted any local shops in that general area to see if those particular coins have been brought in, or to advise them coins going to PCGS are getting stolen, and quite possibly floating around and could wind up in their shop sometime?
    I'll come up with something.

Very simply the automatic sorters at one of the regional centers miss read the bar code and put it in the wrong cart. When it got to the next sorting center it read right and had to be routed again.
Had one of mine show up at a Chicago sorting center going to California once.

Mailed from A it was supposed to go to B yo be sent to C but it was sent to D instead, E told D it was supposed to go to C, C was never looking for it because it was missent somewhere between A & B, D is telling A it's headed back to C...E went back on break.

    Our language is clear.
Had the message read "missing", instead of "missent" I might have missed this thread. Now that it's resent, or is that re-sent, I will harbor no resentment and continue to hold our* hope. Let's make this clear.
Its perfect English. Language image How confusing.

    *OUT

I resent this because of my typo. image Make cents ?
