Jefferson Specialists... Why?

Ok... Jefferson specialists... why?

$1900??????????????????

The last time this coin sold on Heritage, it was a little over $500... HERE

What caused the jump? Terrible pictures the first time... or did the coin receive a sunburn?

Compradore... if you're out there... is this the way the coin looked when you owned it?

And finally... anybody want to figure out how high the price guide will go because of this coin?

Peace!

for a lot of coins 4 years is a big gap

this has gotta be a near condition census coin for the variety or even tied for top pop (well this isn't it, pop show 68 in ms67) probably a little high from re-submits

trends, new collectors, more information than ever, crappy pictures, fluke timing

here are some comp 66s with FS. notice the one that sold way above the others.

i am not saying i know why. just throwing out some info & speculation

If you think that is nuts ... how about a 1996-P Washington Quarter in PCGS-MS68 (pop 53?) for around $2,000 with the last (5) sales between $200-$400 best I can tell. I think I have about a dozen of the that pop 53 in my collection and I figured most of the coins at about $400 per. Did my 12 coins just jump $20,000 in value this week? Why do I think not.

the really crazy thing imo is that there were 2 people pushing unless in the TOS the auction companies have the right to push bids. seems i remember a big stink within the past year about an auction companies TOS stating this.

but that aside, do a lot of coins have the potential to go for moon money as you guys so eloquently put it, but they just lack the competitor a lot of the time? then when a competitor comes a long for the next one there is not one yet again to compete to crazy levels.

idk, somewhere in the lorentz factor, chaos theory, pattern recognition, game theory, psychiatry and master-level economics analysis i'm sure the answer will present itself. maybe all of the above is how we truly define insanity with a large side serving on inconsistency? if you have ever watched "numbers" i'm sure you see what i am getting at.

for those wanting to take it to the next SEVERAL levels, here you go, don't blame me if you stroke out, you've been warned: proceed with caution

I once had a coin go for what I considered moon money to me. This was at HA. There were obviously two guys going after it. High bidder couldn't pay, or whatever, and it got re-listed. Then it sold for 1/2 of the moon money. Which was well under under guide price. Guess the other guy found one in the interim. Auctions are a funny thing.

considering the coin is an MDS example with no chance at an upgrade or even a Plus, no chance at being designated Full Steps and with tone which is average at best i can see no reason for the price but the long-shot exception of the pedigree. this issue is relatively common despite it's key date status.

The picture from the 2008 auction does not give the appeal that the 2012 auction does. The 2012 auction make the coin look very attractive. The 2008 looks only blah.

<< <i>These kind of price jumps have been seen recently for low pop Jeffs such as the 1948-S, 1949-D, 1939-S at Heritage and the 1953-D at TT. That being said, while I think the coin in question is attractive, there has been a 1939-D PCGS-67 Jeff that's been for sale on eBay for some time now that can't get a $599 opening bid. While increased Jeff demand, Compradore pedigree, nice toning or really good steps for a 38 are reasonable explanations, I lean towards the "it will be returned/that's just auctions/there is no reasonable explanation" explanation.

As for the Price Guide question, I'd like to think it would stay unchanged until a comparable sales price is realized, but I won't be surprised to see the value increase. >>

Psst... Jefferson Frog... it was probably my fault the 39-S, 48-S and 49-D in MS67 went where they did... I was the under bidder or really close on most of them. I thought throwing crazy money at most of them would conclude with at least one in my set. I was wrong.

But with over 60 examples of this coin in MS67... $1900... I agree completely with the Keets. It's not a DDO... and IMHO, the Compradore pedigree didn't realize the prices I thought they would sell for the first time.

    But, there it is.

    Oh well...

    Peace!

I think this was just the combination of registry fever and market availability. Even though there is a significant population, they seem not to hit the market very frequently by looking at the HA archives. I assume that two guys who needed this nicely toned pedigreed Jefferson were both unwilling to wait any longer.

I almost spit up on my keyboard when I checked "My Tracked Lots" and saw the final price on that coin. Including the buyer's fee, the total is 10x what I got my PCGS-67 for.
    When in doubt, don't.

Maybe one of the billionaires bought it instead of a bottle of Scotch yesterday .. or maybe they bought it to enjoy while drinking the $2,200 bottle of Scotch.

Don't let it bring you down and don't lose sleep over it. As I mentioned, a pop 53 Clad quarter just fetched about $2,000 (Lot # 9019) in the same sale. I have a dozen of that exact date and grade in my collectrion and probably couldn't get $1,000 for one of mine no matter how hard I tried (unless the underbidder might be reading this LOL)!

And, if a "pop 53" clad quarter from the mid-1990's is now worth "$2,000" ... can I conclude that my pop 10 and 15 pieces in the set from the 1970's and 1980's should be worth at least that much? In my dreams .. yep!

maybe, just maybe someone going for a + ?

there aren't any 67+ or 68 at pcgs

not having to make a full grade has opened up a lot of coins for regrade
