NEWP from the Houston show

I fled work early today and stopped by the Houston show. Seemed pretty slow, but it is a Thursday of course so I hope it picks up for the dealers. Very light on world material but luckily Josh from Civitas was there so I was able to give away some of my meager funds. There were a couple of dealers with a lot of Central and South American slabbed coins so if that's your area you may have better luck, for me Civitas was the only dealer with things I collect.
1582 Saxony Albertine Taler in an NGC 62 slab, my first 16th C. Taler, and it does look better in hand than my photos.

How does one determine the price for such a fine old coin - I can't imagine there's a price guide- or is there??

You just give the dealer a check and let him fill in the amount.
For 16th C. stuff all you can really do is look for auction records and try to judge the coin against what has sold previously, I primarily use the Heritage archives. There is a Standard Catalog of German Coins 1501- Present, but it is infrequently updated and usually stops at XF pricing for the early stuff. It is useful for looking at the relative rarity of different coins however.
And these types are often surprisingly affordable to collect, many of the early German States Taler types can be had for $350-550 for very nice XF's and even AU. Slabbed MS graded coins of course go for more, but are still often under $1000 for some of the more common types such as this.
