Has anyone ripped any wax lately?

Just curious what everyone is ripping these days in the non-sports world and how the results came out?

  • I wish I knew of some cool stuff to rip. I've done a Dexter box, A Tudors box, etc but to me it's not really that exciting. Put the stuff up on ebay right after ripping. I wish there would be a set like the ealry seventies Silly cycles, Odd Rods or Fiends and Machines come back out. Wonder if any artist is out there trying something like the old Big Daddy Roth inspired art. Would simply love it.

My opinion only of course, but I just can't do the Garbage Pail or Wacky Packages stuff anytime after the original years. Wouldn't be the same. Have been looking at the Breygent stuff which lately but not purchased any yet. Maybe I'll go for the Movie Posters collection or something.

I totally agree with you on the Wacky packages. Go original or go home!

I have ripped some Autos of 1977 and Hysterical History recently because those are two sets that I never knew were released even though a was a teen at the time. Now I am about to rip a box of 1972 Topps Presidents.

Are you trying to find PSA candidates? Or just making sets?

  • something funny... my wife is a Bo Derek freaky fan from back when. Did buy a box of the Bo Derek Fleer cards a year ago. Had not ever heard of them but was searching for Bo Derek stuff on ebay for her for xmas. Cost I think 6 bucks for the box. we went through them and she pulled some of her favorites. i then 'tried' to explain: Baby, those ones you pulled out are kind of off center and a couple others are a little stained. There was zero comprehension of what I was trying to say. So her favorites are probably some of the worst centered/stained cards from that 6 dollar box. So indeed those are the best cards and won me a couple points ! The minty cards, long in the trash.

What is actually cool is the fact that she saw these cards like I did when I was 10 - no friggin idea on quality etc. She saw cards she liked and that was that. I wish I could still do that.
  • Interesting on the Bo Derek wife card views. Actually so interesting it makes me think of what is important to 99% or this world's population. NOT THIS STUFF. Screw the 99%ers. Cards rule. But I also wish I wasn't wasting money on this. I could of had another property that lost 40% of value ! woo hoo !

It was nice though to post your wife's view. We should have all stayed like that. It's real.

My wife doesn't get any of this and is sick of all the cards all over the place, but she also knows I enjoy she she tries not to discourage me. There are worse vices than this!

As for the Presidents, I am looking for gradeable cards, but don't know yet if I am going to try to put together the set or sell the better cards. It might depend on the overal quality and what I think about the set since I have never collected it or owned it before.

Im actually slowly putting together a 56 Topps US Presidents set. It's kind of strange to me but the 72s look like reprints of the 56s...I mean by photo quality because I know they used the same exact photo. That is what turned me off to the 72 set.

I was at a small card show last week and picked up a beautiful nm/mt or better 1979 Topps Incredible Hulk set for only 10 bucks! Now I just need to buy the stickers which is no big deal but I'll have no more than 20.00 in the entire nm/mt set. Im real pleased with that.

I have yet to decide which Planet of the Apes set I will do. 67? 69? 75?

The other sets I plan on adding to my collection are 75 Topps Good Times, 78 Topps Superman 1, 77 Charlies Angels 1, 2, and 3, 78 Kiss 1 and 2, and all the 60s Batmans. I have half sets of the red, blue, and black bat. I have no Bat Laffs yet. I also slowly will pick up Wacky Packages and someday soon give them more attention. Seems like I have moved quickly on getting what I want for non sports. Im probably halfway there or better. I might treat myself to a Superman 1 box to rip after the holidays.

I agree too. I broke up a full box of 6ths and ripped about 6 packs. Unfortunately results were not good as far as centering and whiteness. With the exception of 15th and 16th series, it's tough to do well ripping wacky wax!

. . . and 15th usually has track marks on the cards.

Yes. Another problem with the 15ths is that often the white backs are against the seal and non-removable wax stains ensue.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in original series WP unopened packs, I have a bunch available. Available series include 6,7,8th blue, 9th,10th,12th and 15th.
All are guaranteed legitimate and most are in very nice shape. Let me know and I'll be happy to provide scans and prices.
