Chicago Sun-Times Show Report

Hey Everyone,
Attended the Sun-Times show in chicago today and just wanted to post some of my thoughts on the show....
I dont post much on these boards, but my name is Jeremy, I'm 34, from Dubuque, IA. My collecting focus is mostly on my 1956 topps set in psa7 (approximately 15% complete; working on it for 2 years), and I just got into collecting unopened wax/cello/raks from the late 70's into the early 80's. I've enjoyed reading a lot of the posts on here and have participated in group breaks and have really learned a lot about the unopened wax market and PSA. Anyways, my dad and I attended the Sun-Times show today....
I've been to probably the last ten sun times show as its an easy 3 hour drive from Dubuque. I thought that this show was one of the better Sun-Times shows of recent memory.
There was a decent sized line going into the show at around 10 am, and when we started walking around, I got to meet Mike (miconelegacy) and Dave (70stoppsfanatic). I introduced myself, and it was great to visit with them for about 10 minutes and they showed me a lot of stuff at their table. They showed me an unopened 1978 topps rack box, and I think my jaw about dropped to the floor. In addition, items like a 1975 topps rak box, a 1962 topps rak pack, and some other wax boxes from the 70s. Typically, at a suntimes show you see little to zero vintage wax. I noticed on the board on saturday that they had a 1979 cello box in their case, and was hoping that this might be available on Sunday. It still was and was sealed by BBCE so I knew that it was a genuine box. We had just gotten to the show, so I wanted to look around for a bit first.
We spent the next three hours looking around the show. I still think while EBAY is great, there is still nothing like going to a show with quality vintage PSA graded cards, and getting to drool over Memory Lane's current/upcoming auction material, and meeting some of the dealers. I think I saw my first PSA 10 bird/magic rookie; asking price $18,000 was probably one of the highlight cards of the day. It was also good to talk with Jeff and his dad from Card Country as well. Lots of good people at the show....
I wasnt looking for any 1956 topps cards in particular, but I snagged a nice PSA7 harmon killebrew, and my dad snagged a few cards off his list as well. A 1965 maris PSA 8 and a 1960 topps all star mantle in PSA7.5.
I headed back to Dave and Mike's table and they gave me a good deal on the 1979 cello box, as I have been looking for one for a while, so I grabbed that. I'll keep it unopened and add it to my unopened collection that is growing, and I will add a 1981 topps wax box from the group break this week in the mail, so I'm excited about those two adds. I really enjoyed meeting them and just talking cards and sharing in some of their passions.
All in all it was a great day. Shared some good conversations about cards and life with my dad on the way to the show so that was also a lot of fun. I was also happy that he got a couple of cards off his want list and got a decent deal on both of them. I posted some pictures below!

I don't collect unopened stuff except for all the 1980's topps wax boxes and factory sealed sets. Just missing 82 and 80 as far as sealed wax boxes. Good luck on your quest to complete your 56 set.
Thanx for the report.
Congratulations on your pickups. The Harmon is very nice.
I agree on the fact that attending a show expands the experience from just buying on ebay.
Since I'm mostly a game board collector - unfortunately ebay is practically the only game in town.
I do think it's time for me to get out tho.
Your unopened collection looks good and you're off to the races! Good luck in the future.
thank you for taking the time to share with us

All of my unopened is at or over 20 years old - so don't worry - you can hold out.
I don't buy any more - so it's just collecting dust - and that's fine with me.
<< <i>Nice pickups Jeremy. It was good seeing you and your dad as always. I'm glad Ed was good to you guys on the killebrew deal. See you in march!

Jeff,
Thanks for the 1972 Cooper rookie (aka Fisk rookie). Nice talking with you again.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
